Mike, I am very pleased that you appreciated so deeply what I was about in these paintings.

The very sad Manhattan Madonna is the universal, ethereal but eternal Third World woman superimposed upon the greatest work of Man, Manhattan, concrete but vulnerable. Nature is present (free seagulls) but threatened by perverted Nature (the Government eagle)and the harpoon, arrow, missile directed at the East River. Message: Mother and Child transcend the greatest works of Man.

In contrast Melbourne Madonna wanted to capture the simple Aussie a-political hedonism of happy, uncomplicated life in the leafy suburbs linked (via the famous, central Flinders Street railway station in Melbourne) to work and play in the City, in downtown Melbourne. Indeed the Melbourne Madonna seems a bit surprised by her new circumstances though her girl friends can still go to night clubs. Several of the hundred people going in and out of the station are actually dear friends, woman professionals working for big corporations in the City.

The FLOWERS are highly significant and magically arise from the Italian Renaissance Golden Rectangle geometry . The 4 -petalled European flower called Truelove (Paris quadrifolia) had a Sacred and Profane Medieval significance - Sacred as the Cross, and Father, Son, Holy Spirit and Blessed Virgin and Profane as an aphrodisiac and good luck (4) and love charm (thus
one of Chaucer's characters in his Medieval "Canterbury Tales" puts "truelove" under his tongue before he sets out to serenade the Carpenter's wife).

In the painting the four-petalled Golden Rectangle geometry "golden flowers" become decorations in the Crown of the Regina Mundi (Queen of the World), seagulls (free) and in the middle of the painting a Sacred Flower as compared to the Eagle (war, power, Big Government, symbol of the CIA).
