Comment in question 08-08-2007 05:50 Top scientists VS anonymous Bush-ites Science is of course about sensible scepticism - indeed the scientifc method involves the critical testing of potentially falsifiable hypotheses. However on extremely serious matters sensible people sensibly defer to top expert opinion and authoritative collective scientific opinion (even brilliant scientists are typically only expert in their speciality). Thus on personal medical matters only a fool would ignore expert medical advice and an even greater fool would ignore the same advice given in further independent medical opinions. No doubt few if any readers of MWC News - including those with scientific backgrounds and indeed scientific research backgrounds - are experts on climatology or atmospheric physics. Accordingly they have to rely on expert collective opinions just as they have to rely on expert medical opinions (and expert second opinions) in relation to the health of themselves or their loved ones. Thus readers of this thread have to decide between the collective wisdom of major scientific bodies warning of impending DISASTER from global warming (e.g. the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, the world's biggest general scientific organization), the US National Academy of Science, the British Royal Society, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change etc) VERSUS the dangerous and anti-social climate change denial of anonymous Bush-ite bloggers and of corrupt, racist, terracidal, Bush-ite climate criminals such as the Bush Administration and its extreme right wing ally in climate genocide, the Bush-ite Australian Government. The Bush-ite flat-earthers in relation to anthropogenic global warming are akin to those who (for whatever reasons) deny the link between cigarette smoking and premature death from lung cancer and cardiovascular problems (cigarette smoking kills about 5 million people around the world and about 400,000 Americans EACH YEAR. Global warming is already contributing to the annual avoidable global mortality of 16 million each year - but threatens the lives of a billion people this century. TERTRACIDE clearly refers to the killing of the BIOSPHERE (you can't kill inanimate things). For an alarming recent account of ongoing Terracide read Professor James Lovelock's recent book "The Revenge of Gaia" (London, 2006)in which he considers that we may have already passed the point of no return in terms of irreversible damage to planet temperature homestatic (balancing) mechanisms.
