There is something I picked up along the way, that two thirds of the population will go along with any thing, no matter how horrendous it may be, as long as a person deemed to be a person of authority and trust says it is OK. It came up in a conversation I had with a rather amazing woman I know, who has a string letters behind her name and many great talents. She was talking about psychological test that were carried out. Although I had heard of this before, but she was talking as a Psych. Also Merton and others have made the observation that a politician can get people to believe lies, he/she does not have to prove the truth, just has to keep repeating the lies. 
So when a shifty politician says the majority of the people agree with the government. I think, so what? I'm in the minor third, I am still awake! 
I think to a politician the truth has no value unless it can be used for political advantage, mostly they are lie spinners.
