Comment in question 16-10-2007 13:59 Nuclear, greenhouse, poverty threats & B Excellent article. We came so close to oblivion in 1962 and now the Bush Administration is endangering the whole world in relation to nuclear weapons. Dr John Holdren , President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, the world's biggest general scientific organization) has identified (1) nuclear weapons, (2) climate change and (3) poverty as the three major threats acutely threatening the world. The Bush Administration is notorious for its dishonest scepticism and denial in relation to man-made global warming, refusal to sign Kyoto, refusal to seriously constrain American carbon dioxide pollution (the US is the world's biggest CO2 polluter and one of the biggest on an annual per capita basis - its cowardly, greedy, racist, climate criminal ally Australia being the worst big country on a per head basis). The Bush Administration has committed huge resources to illegal war and genocide - the accrual cost of the Iraqi Genocide and the Afghan Genocide is $2.5 trillion, almost the same as that for US support since 1956 for Apartheid Israel ($2.6 trillion). 16 million people die avoidably from POVERTY each year on Spaceship Earth (9.6 million being under-5 year old infants) with George Bush at the helm on the flight deck (see "The Cost of War" and "Body Count" on MWC News via the link below). However while unchecked CO2 pollution may kill hundreds of millions this century (mainly in Africa and South Asia) and poverty will kill a crudely estimated 16 x 100 million = 1.6 billion this century, a full-blown nuclear catastrophe will kill 6,500 million - the whole lot of us, some quicker, some slower. The Bush Administration, rather than minimizing the nuclear threat is INCREASING the threat by violating or undermining international treaties aimed at limiting nuclear tests, stopping development new weapons, keeping space free of weapons, and progressive nuclear disarmament, by assisting Israel to attack nuclear facilities in the Middle East - and now by threatening the Russians with anti-missile emplacements in Eastern Europe. According to the prestigious Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists: "The five NPT[Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty]-recognized nuclear weapon states have failed in their obligation to make serious strides toward disarmament--most notably, the United States and Russia, which still possess 26,000 of the 27,000 nuclear warheads in the world. By far the greatest potential for calamity lies in the readiness of forces in the United States and Russia to fight an all-out nuclear war. Whether by accident or by unauthorized launch, these two countries are able to initiate major strikes in a matter of minutes. Each warhead has the potential destructive force of 8 to 40 times that of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. In that relatively small nuclear explosion, 100,000 people were killed and a city destroyed; 50 of today’s nuclear weapons could kill 200 million people." According to Dr Tilman Ruff (President of the Australian Medical Association for the Prevention of War, MAPW)) in an ABC Radio National Ockham's razor lecture entitled " Abolishing weapons of terror" it is technically possible to achieve complete nuclear disarmament - the technical protocol has been worked out by experts. However the dangerous, delusional, racist and war criminal Bush Administration is heading the world in the OPPOSITE direction. Guest |
