More than 70 percent of Americans are opposed to any military action by Washington against Iran over its nuclear dispute with the West.  
 
According to a USA Today/Gallup poll released on Monday, 73 percent of voters say Iran's nuclear issue should be solved through diplomacy and only 18 percent favor military action.  
 
Republicans were twice as likely as Democrats to endorse taking military steps, the poll said.  
 
US President George W. Bush had recently claimed that if Iran acquired nuclear know-how the world could face World War III.  
 
The poll indicates that 64 percent of Americans disapprove of Bush's performance as president. Fifty percent of the respondents have expressed their 'strong disapproval' of Bush's policies -- the highest since Bush came into office.  
 
The results are based on telephone interviews with 1,024 adults conducted on November 2-4, 2007. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
