Comment in question 21-11-2007 06:56 Black Hole. I find the words of Professor Richard Dawkins, below interesting compared with the words of Swami Vivekananda. “We can even discuss ways of deliberately cultivating and nurturing pure, disinterested altruism - something that has no place in nature, something that has never existed before in the whole history of the world. We are built as gene machines and cultured as meme machines, but we have the power to turn against our creators. We, alone on earth, can rebel against the tyranny of the selfish replicators” “... To get any reason out of the mass of incongruity we call human life, we have to transcend our reason, but we must do it scientifically, slowly, by regular practice, and we must cast off all superstition. We must take up the study of the super-conscious state just as any other science. ….” Consider this, to overcome the genetic knee jerk aspects of self as it were, and our indoctrinations, can leave a void a black hole so to speak, the advise of Vivekananda I believe is sound, slowly slowly. Achieving such a state can happen in a rapid way and if not guided or controlled, can place the mind into a terrible place. The western traditions often identify this process as passing through “The dark night of the soul”. (St John of the Cross). People of monastic background, Bede Griffiths, John Main, refer to this process as dying to ones self. The author and psychiatrist Scott Peck, wrote of his “Dark Night”, but would not supply details, (this is pretty normal), but did say a nun got him through it. This not about religion, but religion often gives voice to a concept I believe, that is later articulated in the forum of science. So yes it seems mankind must change his nature to survive.
