Comment in question 26-01-2008 23:06 I have never read an article that is so completely false and misleading. The only genocide or anything that could be called that happened in the sothern state of Tasmania and a large killing of aboriginals occured in W.A. in the 1800's as retaliation for the killing of white people by a specific group. The sudden drop in population was not due to genocide but rather white man's disease, alcholism and other similar factors. It should also be noted that the governments intervention in the N.T. has broad support amongst the population with most of tthe respected aboriginal elders and leaders supporting it. The intervention has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with stopping the sexual abuse of young children and the availability of drugs and alchol in these communities. It should also be noted that the 1975 racial discrimination act was not suspended, what the government did was to use a section of the constitution to overide the inefectual government of the Northern Territory. The chief minister of the N.T. then resigned following the intervention. I am not expecting my comments to be posted however I would ask that you are more careful in checking the facts of what you writre before grossly misrepresenting the majority of Australians. And as a white, male I can honestly say that I respect the view of some Aboriginals that this is there invasion day but articles such as this only divide people and don't help us move forward recognizing that red, yellow, black, or white we are all Australians. |
