Comment in question 26-01-2008 21:13 Invasion of Australia May I say your comments re the invasion of Australia either do your education in Australian history no credit, or you have been almost entirely misinformed on the subject. Yes, there were unfortunate incidents, but your language is so intemperate that I suspect you are overly influenced by the fables that make the British Government a bunch of murderers. It was not the First Fleet, nor the Second, Third and Fourth who did the damage. I'm sorry to say, the zeal of the conquering churchmen was perhaps as much at fault as any. Governor Phillip's instructions with regard to the indigenous population were clear: not to harm or mistreat them. And he went out of his way to protect them. Many were to suffer and die from smallpox, but that could not have been anticipated - after all, there was no sign of the disease during the eight month voyage. There is much, much more to be said on this, but I suggest you avail yourself of reliable records and more recent research to learn the error of your ways. And then, perhaps, you might feel inclined to apologize to the many descendants of the First Fleeters who currently live in Australia and elsewhere in the world. May I also observe that your small photograph does not appear to be that of an indigenous North American. Do I need to relate some of the tragedies that occurred there? Bob Ryan Guest |
