The problem is the, \'old two thirds syndrome\'. Two thirds of society will accept, and involve them selfs in any horror, so long as it has the apparent blessings of persons of authority. 
In other words two thirds of society, DO NOT THINK FOR THEIR SELFS. Didn\'t Thomas Merton know that? He wrote a fair bit about the unthinking American. 
If one has empathy, then one would be horrified at the thought of torturing another soul, directly or by proxy.  
To quote Merton \"We have become zombies, dead bodies moved by evil spirits\".  
Your great Aunt\'s terrible torture was horrific, and when I read how the spiritual giant Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, has great difficulty in dealing with the brutal torture and murder of his beloved sister at the hands of the Nazis. I look in disbelief at the evil road the US zombies are taking, led be the demons from this Earthly Hell.  
Evil will stand under any flag.
