Globalization is actually giving a lot of these people many things - namely poverty, disease, etc. When foreign investors and multinational corporations move into third world countries and destroy environments, take resources from local people, are kick people off their land they are forced to move the overcrowded squatter camps on the edges of the world's cities. Also, the pull of economic advancement brings people to the cities because they have no hope for education or work in their rural villages. That is why rural development and micro-credit programs have been very successful at curbing rural to urban migration and even having urban migrants return home to their villages. What can Americans do? Pay attention to your consumption and how what you buy might be extracting resources (oil, mining, etc.) from somewhere else causing this destitution and poverty.
