Bush the Dry Drunk
"Dry Drunk" is a pejorative term engendered by faith-based therapies like AA and the 12 Steps for which there is an 85 to 90 % failure rate. Thus the thesis of this article is based on a false premise - that there is such a thing as an "addictive personality" or "Dry Drunk" -- addiction is learned by reinforcement of circuits or pathways (endorphin/opioid) in the brain and it can be extinguished as research from Finland and the US has shown via medication. If Bush has stopped drinking that is a good thing. But if he is an "alcoholic" then he cannot try even one drink as that would be like throwing gasoline on a fire. However, the solution would be for him - if he relapsed - to take naltrexone before drinking and that way reverse his addiction. It is not Bush the individual that concerns me so much as the 18 million problem drinkers and alcoholics in the US who have not been given access to this FDA approved, generic (cheap) medication....
