Comment in question 28-11-2008 11:14 War Crimes - But also the crime of disin This evening in Chelmsford as I handed out pre-written letter-cards inviting people to express protest to the Israeli Defense Minister regarding the jailing of Shministim (refusing to go into the IDF) a young French woman working for a charity organisation berated me for what she called my misguided views about Israel-Palestine. She was insistent that the Palestinians are playing a \"propaganda game\" to gain the sympathy of the world and even claimed that they self-injure or burn aid trucks etc to \"blame the Israelis\". My search for objective facts such as the innumerable violations of UN resolutions, the apartheid wall, acts of Israeli aggression directly filmed, available on the internet and undeniable, or witnessed by members of the ISM such as Rachel Corrie (whom she had never heard of) the 1200 civilians killed in Lebanon, the few reported atrocities such as the murder of a family on a beach outing and so on, all deflected from a rock-solid closed minded view and her dogged insistence on the (in her view) just outcome of the 1967 war, which \"the Arabs started and lost territory in consequence\". All prior history back to 1948 had been erased from her pages - the Zionist tactic of starting the accounting for outrages at the point where the victim retaliates. True there is a complexity to this sad tale that can catalogue wrongs on both sides but of recent years the apalling scale of persecution and oppression, the inhumanity and immorality of the Israeli state and a good many israelis has, in my view, completely overshadowed the behaviour of the NAZI State amd Many NAZIs towards the Jewish people in the middle of the last century. The great crime of our times is the absolute failure of a multi-billion dollar media apparatus which - in a decent, civilised society of a democratic state should inform the people and facilitate objective analysis of the facts - to deliver to the youth of our time, like the young French woman I spoke with this evening, a properly-informed and politically aware understanding of the IsraelPalestine conflict. This is an issue of profound significance to the collective human conscience and having immense implications for our collective pursuit of a decent, moral, civilised and harmonious human society. Surely, the wilful neglect of responsibility in this matter is a serious crime against humanity. If I were a journalist today I think I would quit the profession for shame. Registered |
