Comment in question 10-04-2009 13:26 An Over-Simplification It is extremely unlikely that Obama will get involved in the case of the Cuban Five. The reasons are not simple but the logic is easy to follow and anyone who has taken more than a passing interest in American politics will be very familiar with it. This of course, excludes most Americans who, as Tansborn points out, have probably never heard of the Cuban Five. The people who own western capitalism, and in particular the American government and its military machine, hate communism. They hate a lot of things but most viciously, just as Israelis hate Arabs, they hate communists; in particular, they hate Cuban revolutionary communists with a hate that has been festering for almost 50 years. Cuban ex-patriots in Florida also hate Cuban revolutionary communists with a deep and bitter passion because they were disinherited by the Cuban revolution. Not just because “my enemy’s enemy is my friend” are these Cuban ex-patriots are particular friends of the people who own western capitalism but also because they attended to the dirty business of assassinating John F Kennedy on their behalf and of course, this sinister alliance was also instrumental in securing the Bush election of 2001. The Cuban lobby in Florida is a cow more sacred than the Israel lobby in American politics. Right now the people who own western capitalism are wondering how much slack they need to cut Obama and in what areas, in order to keep the American illusion of democracy alive. They certainly have plans to deal with Cuba in the near future and may think it a short-term measure to throw a few small fish back in the pond in the interim but may not relish hurting the feelings of their Cuban friends.
