Rush to save the earth?
Some time ago I was listening to Rush Limbaugh when he made an observation that absolutely floored me. During one of the hurricanes, Rush was watching weather footage on Fox TV while he was broadcasting his radio program. Between calls he paused to say that watching the live hurricane footage, he was truly awed by the tremendous power of nature. \"How can anyone think that anything we puny humans can do can have any impact on anything so vast as world climate.\" He said that he could not see how driving an SUV could possibly impact something as powerful and vast as the earth\'s climate. \"It\'s absurd for we puny humans to think we are that powerful.\"

I wish I had a tape of the comments. I still find it hard to believe that someone could so not get it.

Let me digress a minute so I can explain why I listen to Rush from time to time. First of all, I often in spite all the bombast, find him really funny. I get the feeling that he is like a big kid that likes to stir things up. Getting a rise out of people is often more important for him than actually saying something of substance. Most of the time, I don\'t think he really believes himself all that much. I just think he has found a lucrative market and he is exploiting it for all it is worth. I think most people with an IQ at 65 or below actually believe him. They even call themselves \"Ditto Heads.\" His program is to serious political/social analysis what “professional “ Wrestling is to the NFL. Occasionally I can find choice tidbits that have slipped through the alternative press. Also I’m sure the Administration trial balloons certain of their hair-brained policies through the various hate-shows like Limbaugh, Hannity, Michael Savage, etc to see how they will play in the Bible Belt.

When Rush made the hurricane comment I didn’t sense the pundit/wise-guy in him. I sensed a deeply awed heartfelt emotion breaking through. I sensed that here was a truly felt, real conviction coming out. I was at once deeply moved and appalled. I had never really pitied him before. It was as if I were looking at a horribly deformed person who was completely unaware of his deformity. Would someone have the heart to point out such a handicap? Then I thought of myself. What are the things I don’t know that I don’t know? I don’t recycle. I probably use twice a month’s energy of a poor Indian village every day. I need to recycle the beam in my own eye…
