Israeli soldiers killed four Palestinian
2014.07.09 03:54:44

The Israeli army has said that its soldiers have killed four Palestinian gunmen who slipped into southern Israel by sea from the Gaza Strip, an attack which Hamas has claimed responsibility.

Hamas said it was in telephone contact with the commander of the squad that stormed Zikim beach and that he was exchanging fire with the army.

Peter Lerner, an Israeli military spokesman, said four gunmen were killed by combined fire from troops, the air force and the navy. Israeli forces were still searching the area. He did not say whether the gunmen had swum in or landed by boat.

Lerner said an Israeli soldier had been wounded in the incident, which he described as rare. The Israeli military keeps Gaza under tight naval cordon.

Mustafa Barghouti, secretary general for the Palestinian National Initiative
2014.07.09 03:51:04

Speaking to us from Ramallah, Mustafa Barghouti, secretary general for the Palestinian National Initiative said:

Rockets were launched from Gaza in retaliation to Israeli airstrikes. But how many Israeli's were killed? None. How many Palestinians? 16 today, and 45 this past week. This is an attack on all the Palestinian people.

Palestinians have the right to resist. To claim that an Israeli life is more important and more precious than a Palestinian life is completely unacceptable.

How does Israel's missile defence system work?
2014.07.09 03:41:03

The "Iron Dome" was credited with taking down over 200 incoming missiles during the eight-day war in November 2012, with a 90% success rate.

Israeli rockets are launched when incoming missiles are detected. The system predicts the route the rockets would take, and ignore them if they're headed for open ground.

The system calculates where it is safest to intercept the rockets, if they're going to land in a populated area - in which case ground-based missiles are then fired to destroy the target.

Each battery costs $50m, developed by Israel's state owned munitions industry.

Military pressure against pro-Russian rebels
2014.07.09 03:36:44

Ukraine's government kept up military pressure against pro-Russian rebels on Tuesday, threatening them with an "nasty surprise", while the militants said they were preparing to fight back after losing their main stronghold.

President Petro Poroshenko, drawing confidence from the fall of the rebel bastion of Slaviansk at the weekend, named a new chief of military operations in the east following his appointment of an aggressive new defence minister who again demanded the separatists lay down their arms.

A security official said the government's plan to clear rebels from the two big towns of Donetsk and Luhansk would come as an "nasty surprise" for the insurgents.

But Poroshenko - whose officials have ruled out any more unilateral ceasefires - kept the door open to a further round of indirect peace talks with separatist leaders, naming a possible venue in a government-controlled monastery-town in the east.

Iraq's parliament escheduled
2014.07.09 03:35:40

Iraq's parliament officially rescheduled its next session for early next week after criticism over initial plans for a five-week break, amid pressure for political leaders to agree on a new government that can confront fighters who have overrun much of the country's north and west.

Acting parliament speaker Mahdi al-Hafidh said in a statement that after considering the "national interests," the next session will be on Sunday instead of August 12.

He warned that any delay in forming a new government will jeopardize Iraq's security and democracy and will increase the suffering of Iraqis.

Al-Hafidh's statement made official what he had said late Monday was a "preliminary agreement" among political leaders to skip the long break and move the next session up to Sunday.

Despite the decision to meet Sunday instead of next month, it still appears unlikely that political leaders will be able to bridge their differences in time to settle on names for the top leadership posts - particularly the prime minister, with incumbent Nouri al-Maliki resisting a campaign to replace him.

Al-Maliki's State of Law bloc won the largest share of seats in April's election, securing 92 out of parliament's 328 seats. But he is far short of the majority needed to govern, which means he needs allies to cobble together a coalition government.

Ukrainian government will restart cease-fire negotiations
2014.07.09 03:26:50

The Ukrainian government will restart cease-fire negotiations with pro-Russian insurgents in the country's east only once the rebels lay down their weapons, the defense minister said on Tuesday.

Valery Heletey's statement, posted on the Defense Ministry website, comes amid growing confidence among government forces after they drove the insurgent militia from their stronghold of Slovyansk.

Last week, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko promised cease-fire talks no later than that Saturday, but a series of military successes by the Ukrainian army may have changed minds in Kiev.

Iraq's Sunni tribal leaders have been meeting in the Kurdish regional capital Erbil. They want the world to know that fighters from the Islamic State group are not alone in wanting to bring down the government in Baghdad.
