A manifesto for a Muslim-free Europe, an Infidel-free Middle East
2011.07.25 00:09:55

By Imran Khan

I have just finished reading a terrifying document. It's called 2083: A European declaration of Independence.

It's full of advice for the budding Christian martyr. Handy tips on how to build bombs and make poisons; on how to use video games to hone your shooting skills.

Demise of India's small change
2011.07.21 17:32:26

The Indian central bank, the Reserve Bank of India, had been making quite a song and dance about the 25 Paise coins ceasing to become legal tender from the 30th June this year. It had been asking people to exchange them for equivalent amount of currency. A report the other day said only a little more than a hundred thousand rupees worth of these coins had been deposited in the banks in Bhopal till the 30th June.

Mumbai's painful deja vu
2011.07.17 00:49:29

By Prerna Suri

"I can't believe this is happening again," my friend Radhika tells me over the phone, as I ask her how she's doing.

She's usually a stoic person, a hardened journalist who's been living in Mumbai for years. She's seen and lived through bomb blasts, communal riots - even floods. But the serial blasts on the evening of July 13, 2011 has brought back painful memories of November 26, 2008. And they've softened my tough friends' guard.

Kashmir in environmental peril
2011.07.02 19:26:32

As the plane came to a halt at the Srinagar Airport one of the cabin crew denied us exit from the rear door. She said passengers had to go out through the front door as the Airport had an aerobridge. Surprised, I thought to myself that through the twenty-odd years of militancy the process of development in Kashmir had mercifully not been discontinued. It said much about the Centre’s patience with the turmoil that persisted all around in the Valley as also its belief in the efficacy of improvements in physical conditions on the ground. Perhaps, these were paying off now as this year Kashmir, seemingly, broke all previous records of tourists’ arrival. Our plane flew with a full load of passengers. It was not the only one; many more were flying in everyday as a result of the government’s “open skies” policy.

Responsibility, Accountability and 'The Slippery Slope'
2011.06.30 10:41:32

Why we are seeing this nation sabotage itself in almost every way possible... economically, politically and morally? Perhaps the simple truth is that the idea of responsibility has become something that people in this country don’t want to talk about.

Foreign Aid and the Economic Crisis
2011.06.29 00:10:51

From The Heritage Foundation, a Conservative Think-Tank:

“Abstract: Since 2000 about 95 percent of U.N. member states that receive U.S. assistance have voted against the United States most of the time in the U.N. General Assembly on non-consensus votes. The U.S. should inform aid recipients that their support--or lack of support--for U.S. priorities in the U.N. and other international organizations will directly affect future decisions on allocating U.S. assistance. In order to strengthen and broaden support for America's policies in the U.N., the U.S. should also seek to build coalitions of like-minded nations that are firmly committed to political and economic freedom. Over the long term, U.S. aid could facilitate the expansion of these coalitions by encouraging more countries to become freer, both politically and economically”.

Keeping up with the State Department!
2011.06.26 01:04:43

by Lawrence Davidson

One of the problems with operating a blog that deals with U.S. foreign policy (among other issues) is that it is often hard to keep up.  From the perspective of those who see that the emperor wears no clothes, stupidity and hypocrisy appear almost daily. Take the piece pasted below which has just appeared via Reuters. To be brief, it shows the U.S. State Department once more taking the "let's blame the victim" stance necessited by the fact that the real culprits are the Israelis. As a consequence our government now threatens fines and imprisonment to those who dare defy Israel's illegal blockade in order to bring humanitarian aid to 1.5 million people who have been systematically reduced to despair. Yet again the term "proud to be an American" is confirmed as a very bad joke.

If the Titanic sank today
2011.06.23 00:34:58

Here's how the President, the media and Wall Street would spin it

What would all the world's experts and authorities say today if the Titanic were sinking but nobody was willing to admit it? The U.S. economy, after all, is sinking and taking on an unprecedented volume of water (i.e. debt), yet virtually no one is willing to admit the obvious fact that this ship is sinking. And much like with the Titanic, most "experts" continue to claim the U.S. economy is unsinkable, despite the obvious evidence that we might want to start heading for the life rafts.

Dance Party at Thomas Jefferson's Memorial (video)
2011.06.06 11:02:38

"Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty."
- Thomas Jefferson

We have also learned that despots prefer timid subjects. In the USA the imperial government desecrates the memory of Thomas Jefferson by insisting that all behave timidly in said place. Words like “solemn” and “reverent” flow from them to describe the atmosphere and behavior they expect at the memorial. Thomas Jefferson would have objected to this. He knew better than to call that liberty.

House Passes Authority for Worldwide War
2011.05.29 01:51:57

The House just passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), including a provision to authorize worldwide war, which has no expiration date and will allow this president — and any future president — to go to war anywhere in the world, at any time, without further congressional authorization. The new authorization wouldn’t even require the president to show any threat to the national security of the United States. The American military could become the world’s cop, and could be sent into harm’s way almost anywhere and everywhere around the globe.
