Obama's Speech and Me

As a 65 year-old white man, I thought I "got" Barack Obama's celebrated speech on race when he gave it. But I didn't.  Not until yesterday, when a black stranger walked into the changing room at the gym I go to on South Whidbey Island, Washington. The man commented on my new cowboy boots and asked me if I rode. We got to talking and he said he worked with show horses.

The Dangerous Theism of Chris Hedges

Chris Hedges recently published an article called "The Dangerous Atheism of Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris," ( http://www.alternet.org/rights/80449 ) but he failed to include in it any indication of what he thinks is dangerous about their atheism. He thinks they have horrible political opinions, but does not explain how those relate to atheism.

Hallelujah, Phil is Back

Phil Donahue was fired from MSNBC several years ago when he was the only talk show host to oppose the war in the lead up to Shock and Awe. It seems that opposing any war is not good for business - but we have all known that ever since General Smedley Butler wrote his classic, "War is a Racket". That was in 1935.

Pakistan's Military Rule: Economic Fallout

Food prices have been going through the roof in Pakistan since November, 2007, with many in long queues in front of fair price shops being turned away owing to shortage of flour. At a time when the Rabi crop harvesting in Sindh has started, which should bring down prices, procurement prices are skyrocketing instead. There has been a decline in wheat-sown acreage, fertilizer off take has reduced and 22 % water shortage has been reported for the year ending March, 2008.
