In politics, truth telling can be dangerous. Remember when Jimmy Carter was voted out of office, in part, for telling the American people, in a time of high inflation and unemployment, what they didn’t want to hear—that they were self indulgent and consumed too much? Remember when Larry Lindsey, a top advisor to President George W. Bush, was fired for estimating the cost of the Iraq War to be $200 billion?

Shame on them (the politicians) and shame on us (the public).  We live in the United States of Shame.  Why?  Because everywhere we see nothing but disgrace, dishonor and infamy, yet a complete absence of shame.  In a nation where religion supposedly plays such a big role, people seem to have used it to suppress shame and avoid blame.
