I can’t help but be amused by sentiments being expressed by liberals regarding Robert McNamara’s tenure at the World Bank. The notion is that, hey, McNamara wasn’t so bad. Even though he was responsible for the deaths of millions of people during the Vietnam War, he ended up helping the poor, needy, and disadvantaged around the world with World Bank loans. Stop Military Aid To Region Oscar Arias, the president of Costa Rica and the man who will serve as mediator of the crisis in Honduras, writes in an OpEd piece this morning (July 10th) in the Miami Herald, “This coup demonstrates, once more, that the combination of powerful militaries and fragile democracies creates a terrible risk.” Be first to comment this article | Quote this article on your site | Views: 432

Lest anyone believe that the war on terrorism began on September 11, 2001, take a look at this article from the July 20, 1959, issue of Time magazine, one of the premier examples of the establishment press in America. The article details the facts surrounding the deaths of the first two U.S. soldiers to die in Vietnam 50 years ago, Major Dale Buis and Sgt. Chester Ovnand. One of my all-time favorite Supreme Court decisions is West Virginia State Board of Ed. v. Barnette, a 1943 ruling that it was unconstitutional for the West Virginia Board of Education to require public schoolchildren to salute the flag. The case was brought when Jehovah’s Witnesses (who have initiated several important cases involving constitutional issues) objected to the Board’s order, which required schoolchildren to make a “stiff-arm” salute, raising their right hand, palm up, while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Several children had been expelled for refusing to salute the flag in school, and parents had been prosecuted for promoting delinquency. Comments (1) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 524

I used to love Franken on Saturday Night Live. Although his Stuart Smally character got old very quickly, he did a wonderful Paul Tsongas impression. I’d link to an example on YouTube, but NBC takes its intellectual property very seriously and therefore hundreds of the most humorous bits ever to air on late night television have been tragically withheld from us.
