Chinese authorities “strike hard” at the group, victims dying within days of arrest NEW YORK -- The Falun Dafa Information Center is alarmed at a series of reports indicating adherents in China are being killed in custody within days, or even hours, of being detained by authorities. The Center expressed today that the escalating maltreatment is a direct result of efforts to “stamp out” Falun Gong prior to the summer Olympics. Not Only Dr. Haneef's Case I believe Dr. Haneef's case of proceeding with criminal charges without sufficient evidence has not been a result of mistake or overreaction. The latest evidence allows a possibility of conspiracy behind this. Yet, it is only one of manifestations of a deep and serious problem. Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology Requests to Cancel the Proceedings In a letter submitted to the Board of Land and Natural Resources yesterday, HIMB petitioned to drop its appeal of the fine against coral disease researcher, Greta Aeby, for violating NWHI State Marine Refuge regulations. The research institute cited the recent decision by a state-appointed hearings officer to expand the scope of the investigation as a key motivation for withdrawing its appeal. "THEY WAVE THE FLAG WHEN YOU ATTACK-- WHEN YOU COME HOME THEY TURN THEIR BACK" In traditional march cadence, U.S. military veterans will chant that statement on the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, as they lead a Veterans March for Peace to significant sites in Washington, DC, including the National Archives, home of the U.S. Constitution. Canada’s acquiescence to U.S. post-9/11 demands to integrate Canadian police, intelligence and military with U.S. security policy has increased the risk to Canadians of arbitrary detention, forced disappearances, torture and mass surveillance. “We are witnessing a rapid disintegration of the web of laws and norms that has protected human rights in the past,” says Maureen Webb, human rights lawyer and author of Illusions of Security: Global Surveillance and Democracy in the Post 9-11 World (2007). A chilling example is the story of Maher Arar. A law-abiding Canadian citizen, he was detained in New York in late 2002, and subsequently ‘rendered’ to Syria where he was illegally imprisoned for over 10 months and tortured.
