More CIA Killings, Lies, and Cover-Ups
Op_ed
By MWC NEWS

In June 2001 I wrote an article entitled “Drug-War Killings in Peru,” which condemned the CIA’s participation in the drug-war killings of a 35-year-old missionary named Veronica Bowers and her 7-month-old baby Charity. They had been flying in a small private plane in Peru when CIA officials advised the Peruvian military that the plane might be smuggling drugs.

Real hope:
Op_ed
By Robert Jensen

Expressions of hope are only as truly hopeful as the honesty of the assessment of reality from which they emerge. Conjuring up hope rooted in a denial of reality can only deepen despair in the long run.

Speculation is rampant over what will be President-elect Barack Obama’s first bold move when he takes power January 20. Will he bail out Detroit? Will he move to revamp the health-care system? Will he unveil a comprehensive plan to revive the economy?

Obama Owes Diamond Real Change Not Perfection
Op_ed
By Robert Weitzel

On Election Day, Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! went to Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem to interview voters. She asked 18-year-old Diamond, a first-time voter, why she voted for Barack Obama: “Because he’s the best . . . Obama’s going to make a change, going to cure everything, make everything perfect. I believe in him.”

George Bush, Big-Government Man
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

In an unscripted and candid moment, a top spokesman for President-elect Barack Obama let the cat out of the bag. On Meet the Press, interviewer Tom Brokaw asked transition co-chair Valerie Jarrett, “I wonder if, as a Democrat, which has always represented the party of big government, . . . there will be a kind of paradigm shift this time, that you’ll take the [Chicago mayor] Rich Daley model and shift more money and more responsibility to municipalities and the state government.”

Obama's Change Orgy
Op_ed
By Elias Akleh

After Obama's presidential victory a euphoric feeling swept the streets of most of the States. Thousands of people gathered in the Grant Park in Chicago, thousands others went into the streets of their cities celebrating this occasion. They called it a historic election, a nonviolent revolution, a dream comes true, a breakthrough and a victory over racism. Obama was called a hero, a savior, and some even called him a messiah. Obama's call for change has become an orgy that tantalizes peoples' feelings and hopes.

No Hope for Change This Veterans Day
Op_ed
By Christine Smith

When I visited the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial earlier this year, I was overcome with a deep sadness.  Never in my life have I been emotionally affected by simply visiting a place, and I would never have anticipated I would react as I did.  But there I found myself in tears as I walked along the lit wall that night with two friends, deeply affected by the over 58,000 inscribed names of American men and women who needlessly died in Vietnam.
