Elizabeth de la Vega on Shooting the Moon in 2006

I have to admit that some of the responses to my recent article The White House Criminal Conspiracy (published in the Nation and posted at Tomdispatch.com), in which I argued that the Bush administration should be brought to account in Congress or a court of law for defrauding the American people into war, kept me up at night. No, not the ones that questioned my sanity or sobriety.

Fear and Loathing at San Quentin

"What we've got here is failure to communicate."
Cool Hand Luke

Barbara Bechnel, Phil Gasper and others are admirably articulating the ideological factors that led to the execution of Stanley "Tookie" Williams. I want here to try to address another dimension because I want to believe that those who supported Stan's death remain members of the human community and so can be addressed accordingly. Perhaps even persuaded to reconsider their views so that what happened in San Quentin on December 13th will be terminated.

The 'War on Terror' Scam

The greatest threat to our freedom today is not terrorism, but what governments are doing to counter this perceived terrorist threat.

Let me say that again. Terrorism is not the real danger we face, it's what governments around the world are doing to make us "safe".

"Gone Fishing," How the President Got a Life

The "usually disengaged" President, as columnist Maureen Dowd labeled him, had just returned from a prolonged, brush-cutting Crawford vacation to much criticism and a nation in trouble. (One Republican congressman complained that "it was hard for Mr. Bush to get his message out if the White House lectern had a ‘Gone Fishing' sign on it.") Democrats were on the attack. Journalistic coverage seemed to grow ever bolder. Bush's poll figures were dropping.

American practice of  rendition

Condeleeza Rice is making the rounds in Europe, ostensibly defending the American practice of extraordinary rendition; that is, the practice of secretly kidnapping and torturing what it deems to be suspects. That is merely a ruse and given the nature and history of that administration, it would be reasonable to suggest everything they do is a ruse.

The right to rule ourselves

The photograph of an elderly Iraqi carrying the burned body of a child at Falluja, widely shown during the chemical weapons controversy of recent days, is almost a copy of an earlier one that Iraqis remember - from Halabja in March 1988. Both children were victims of chemical weapons: the first killed by a dictator who had no respect for democracy and human rights, the second by US troops, assisted by the British, carrying the colourful banner of those principles while sprinkling Iraqis with white phosphorus and depleted uranium.

How (Not) to Withdraw from Iraq

On the September 27th Charlie Rose Show, interviewing New Yorker editor David Remnick, Rose brought up the question of what the United States should do in Iraq. Should we "get out" -- or, as Remnick so delicately put it, should we "bolt"? Here was how Remnick ended their discussion, while talking about those who had written on Iraq for his magazine:

Bush Game on Padilla May Backfire

Once again, at the 11th hour, the Bush administration has pulled its punches in the case of Jose Padilla. Using an approach that more closely resembles a game of chess than a system of justice, Team Bush has altered its strategy, while seeking to keep all options open. Its fancy footwork, however, may ultimately backfire.
