Obama and McCain Are Both Wrong
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

Barack Obama’s call for talks with “our enemies” is shaping up as a major bone of contention between him and John McCain in the presidential campaign. As usual, both the Democrat and the Republican get it wrong.

Should They Shoot President Bush?
Op_ed
By Bob Boldt

Before you call a cop to have me arrested for advocating the assassination of yet another president, consider the following:

If George W. Bush knowingly violated national security by outing a covert CIA agent (Valerie Plame) in time of war (an act of high treason)...

Can You Really Love Your Country?
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

Why do people get upset with Barack Obama for not wearing a flag pin on his lapel or with Michelle Obama for suggesting she's not been proud of her country until now? Why is failing to "support the troops" regarded as a sin?

Olmert’s Peace Spin
Op_ed
By Gilad Atzmon

Yesterday Olmert assured Haaretz that the negotiation with Syria is nothing less than an ‘historic breakthrough’. He is absolutely correct.  It’s the first time in Israel’s history that a PM initiates a peace negotiation just to escape a police probe into his own unlawful doings. Apparently, Olmert is seeking a quick escape route that would bring the investigation of his corruption to an immediate halt.

Don't Repeal the Sixteenth Amendment!
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

Surely any champion of freedom wants to get rid of the income tax. And surely the way to really get rid of the income tax is to repeal the Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Right?

Wrong.

A 'Holey' Instrument of Peace in Iraq
Op_ed
By Robert Weitzel

On October 23, 2006 a U.S. soldier or marine peered through the telescopic sight of his M24 sniper rifle and trained it on the face of Nora, a five-year-old Iraqi girl. Her pretty face was close enough to kiss. Instead, he squeezed the trigger and sent a 7.62 round slamming into her skull. The medical report read, "Nora sustained an explosive bullet injury to her head that smashed the skull bones and ruptured her cerebral membrane." Nora survived the sniper's bullet.

Gates’s Hope to Reform the Pentagon Is Barking at the Moon
Op_ed
By MWC NEWS

In a recent speech, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates pleaded with the armed services to emphasize preparing for war against guerrillas instead of spending so much money and effort getting ready for conventional wars. He said that he wanted to avoid the erosion of counterinsurgency capabilities that occurred after the Vietnam War, when the U.S. military forgot all it knew about fighting guerrillas and went back to concentrating solely on a possible battle with the conventional forces of the Soviet Union.

Clinton and Obama Struggle for Power
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

Many Americans are spellbound by the historic contest for the Democratic presidential nomination between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Forgetting the political context, it is indeed something spectacular, even inspiring. A woman and a black man have reached a pinnacle that just a few years ago seemed impossibly far off.
