Canada Copies U.S. Customs

Ironically, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was traveling to the United States to promote his latest film about post-9/11 racial profiling when he was detained upon entry into the country at Newark’s Liberty (another irony) International Airport. U.S. officials denied that Khan was formally detained, but his interrogation lasted more than an hour. The outraged Khan pledged to cut back on visits to the United States, and his incensed fans held a raucous protest. I feel Khan’s pain—literally.

What Ted Kennedy Never Learned
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy is gone. No one in the last 40 years stood as a larger symbol of “liberalism,” the view that government is the answer for everything. A great deal has been said in recent days about his compassion and generosity. But bear in mind that in public life, his compassion consisted in spending other people’s money and authorizing government bureaucracies to interfere with the social cooperation that takes place whenever life, liberty, and property are respected.

Allowing today’s leaders to get away with war crimes will send a dangerous signal to future leaders that they can do the same.

Would Eric Holder Have Prosecuted the Nazis?
Op_ed
By MWC News

Let’s assume that a U.S. president authorizes the CIA to rape the family members of suspected terrorists as a way to get them to talk. He also authorizes his subordinates to place the suspected terrorists on a rack that stretches them apart until they confess and disclose all details of their suspected terrorism.

On 'Death Panels,' 'Socialized Medicine' and Other Red Herrings
Op_ed
By Don Williams

Ain't it a shame our so-called liberal media is obsessed with "death panels" of fevered imaginations rather than death panels that exist in the real world, notably in our present health-care system?

Hope Is No Substitute for Theory
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

Should libertarians hope that Barack Obama succeeds or fails in his presidency? The question comes to mind because conservatives got embroiled in the issue when their leading radio star, Rush Limbaugh, said he hoped Obama would fail. Some commentators thought that was a horrible thing to say. Radio stars need regular public controversy to keep their listeners tuned in, so there’s no point in analyzing what the Republican partisan Limbaugh might have meant. But the question may lead us to other insights.

WINNERS AND LOSERS IN THE AMERICAN WARFARE STATE

“On my last day in Iraq,” veteran McClatchy News correspondent Leila Fadel wrote August 9th, “as on my first day in Iraq, I couldn’t see what the United States and its allies had accomplished. …I couldn’t understand what thousands of American soldiers had died for and why hundreds of thousands of Iraqis had been killed.”

When Will the Heath-Care Debate Start?
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

I’m waiting for the health-care debate to start. The preliminaries have been spirited and loud, but how about a debate?

You may think there’s been a debate, but if you’d been listening carefully, you’d realize it’s a fake, like professional wrestling.
