The Fatal Conceit of Health-Care Reformers
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

It’s easy to get distracted by the details and crushing cost estimates of “health-care reform” while losing sight of the key question: Can a handful of congressmen, most of whom probably have never even run a small business, design an entire market for medical services and insurance?

The Madoff Scandal Exposes Government Failure
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

A rule we can rely on to be unfailingly applied is this: No matter how much the government controls the economic system, any problem will be blamed on whatever small zone of freedom that remains. This of course is evidence of a rigged game. The government can’t possibly monitor and regulate absolutely every transaction that takes place in a country. Stalin and Hitler couldn’t do it by a long shot. So anything that displeases the ruling regime can easily be laid at the doorstep of freedom and be used as an excuse for stamping out whatever traces of liberty still exist.

How McNamara Lost World War II
Op_ed
By Greg Palast

It's been a good week. Robert McNamara's dead and my book, Armed Madhouse, was released in translation in Vietnam.

I don't blame McNamara for losing the war in Vietnam. After all, the good guys won. I do, however, blame him for losing World War II.

Former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, who died on July 6, was best known for ratcheting up the Vietnam War thanks to the false claims he provided to President Johnson, Congress, and the American people.

A New Stimulus? Washington Never Learns
Op_ed
By Sheldon Richman

In Washington, the rule is: If a little poison doesn’t cure the patient, give him more.

This rule is being applied not only to health care, where massive doses of government intervention are being prescribed to treat the toxicity of past government intervention. It’s also being used in the attempt to end the recession.

Why Not Permanently Cancel Aid to Honduras?
Op_ed
By MWC News

I’ve got good news and bad news about the coup in Honduras. The good news is that the U.S. government has suspended $16.5 million in military-assistance programs to Honduras and threatened that another $180 million in aid could be at risk. The bad news is that it’s only a temporary suspension and only a threat of a cutoff, not a permanent termination of foreign aid to Honduras and its military.

The Health Care We Deserve
Op_ed
By MWC News

The givens: our country over decades has jerry-built a health care “system” that is unfair and inefficient. We pay far more for far less care than any other industrialized nation. And we have forty million people uninsured for whom a major illness can mean mortgaging a home, not sending a kid to college, or worse.
