Abie Nathan- A Lonely Rider
Special Features
By Uri Avnery

AT THE funeral of Abie Nathan, I said to myself: the Israel-as-it-is takes its leave from the Israel-as-it-could-have-been. From the state that we dreamed of when it was founded. A state where moral considerations govern both domestic and foreign policy. A state whose citizens take responsibility for their own actions and the actions of their country.

Why the Peaceful Majority of Muslims Are Not Irrelevant
Special Features
By Sheldon Richman

A few years ago, FrontPageMag.com columnist Paul Marek wrote an article titled “Why the Peaceful Majority Is Irrelevant.” His thesis was that even if the majority of Muslims abhor violence, it doesn’t matter because “the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history.... The hard quantifiable fact is, that the ‘peaceful majority’ is the ‘silent majority’ and it is cowed and extraneous.”

Hottentot Morality

"If he steals my cow, that is bad. If I steal his cow, that is good" - this moral rule was attributed by European racists to the Hottentots, an ancient tribe in Southern Africa.

Technological fundamentalism in media and culture
Special Features
By Robert Jensen

While media watchdogs and bloggers probe contemporary news media for signs of bias -- from every angle, on virtually every issue -- perhaps the most important of journalists’ biases is ignored: their routine acceptance of society’s technological fundamentalism. This devotion to the industrial world’s core delusion shows up not just in stories about science and technology but in the assumptions about science and technology that underlie virtually all reporting in the corporate commercial news media in the United States.

The Devil's Hoof

I WAS shocked when I read the headline in Haaretz. It quoted Sari Nusseibeh as saying "There is no Room for Two", meaning two states between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan.

The Anger, the Longing, the Hope

ONE OF the wisest pronouncements I have heard in my life was that of an Egyptian general, a few days after Anwar Sadat's historic visit to Jerusalem.

Has the Surge Prevented Peace?
Special Features
By MWC NEWS

Republican presidential candidate John McCain has made his earlier endorsement of the 'surge' strategy in Iraq a prominent feature of his campaign. By portraying the 'surge' as a huge success. McCain poses as a foreign policy savant and depicts Barack Obama, who didn't favor the 'surge', as a candidate who "does not understand the challenges we face, and did not understand the need for the surge.

Obama- A Knight on a Gray Horse
Special Features
By Uri Avnery

OH DEAR, what has happened to the knight on the white horse?

This week, many of Barack Obama's admirers were shocked. Up to now, it had been believed that the huge sums of money flowing into the coffers of his campaign came from anonymous citizens, each sending a check for 100 or 200 dollars.

Inflation and the New World Order
Special Features
By MWC NEWS

The sunlight on the lake sparkles at dawn. As they have done for millions of years, the rounded tree-shrouded shoulders of the Green Mountains loom above the still waters. A loon calls from the next lake over. Who would guess that that not far from such serenity the world's most powerful nation was teetering on the brink of disaster?
