Malnutrition among under-fives

Apart from dodging bombs and bullets in their schools and neighbourhoods, children in Iraq are suffering from worryingly high levels of malnourishment, according to specialists.

Poverty and insecurity are said to be the main causes of the children’s deteriorating diets. Despite efforts by NGOs and the Iraqi government, violence and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people are making it very difficult for monthly food rations to reach those families that need them most.

“We are displaced and have to change our place [because of spreading sectarian violence] every month, making it difficult for us to get our food rations. As a result, our children are constantly ill and are malnourished because we don’t have enough money to afford good food,” said Samira Abdel-Kareem, a mother-of-three who was forced to flee her Yarmouk neighbourhood of Baghdad to the outskirts of the city.

“I lost a child three months ago because of malnutrition. He was only two years old. I don’t want to lose my other three children and hope someone can help us overcome this problem,” she added.

According to the United Nations Children’s Agency (UNICEF), about one in 10 children under five in Iraq are underweight and one in five are short for their age.

"I lost a child three months ago because of malnutrition. He was only two years old. I don’t want to lose my other three children."

But this is only the tip of the iceberg, according to Claire Hajaj, Communication Officer at UNICEF Iraq Support Centre in Amman (ISCA).

“Many Iraqi children may also be suffering from ‘hidden hunger’ - deficiencies in critical vitamins and minerals that are the building blocks for children’s physical and intellectual development,” Hajaj said. “These deficiencies are hard to measure, but they make children much more vulnerable to illness and less likely to thrive at school.”

Hajaj emphasised the importance of children being properly fed in the first two years of their lives, particularly the first six months when breastfeeding is vital.

“Iraq's exclusive breastfeeding rates are very low compared to other countries in the region. Only 12 percent, as of the last survey, which took place several years ago,” Hajaj said.

Diarrhoea and pneumonia

“Infant formula use is still widespread, increasing the risk of illnesses like diarrhoea and pneumonia, which also contribute to undernutrition. Diarrhoea is a major risk in the absence of safe water and basic sanitation, a problem now affecting many Iraqi communities,” Hajaj said, adding that the first step in preventing undernutrition in children is to ensure proper care for pregnant mothers.

But with insecurity forcing the closure of many heath outreach centres, and hospitals and clinics lacking medicines and specialists, Iraq’s population is increasingly being cut off from access to proper health care, say officials at UNICEF and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Children in the most restive parts of the country – such as Baghdad, Anbar, Diyala, Missan and Basra provinces - are less likely to receive critical preventative health care.

Dr Mayssun Abdel-Rahman, a paediatrician at Baghdad’s Children Teaching Hospital, said that the country’s health system is crumbling and that it was only UNICEF and the World Health Organization that were keeping it afloat. But much more needs to be done, she said, as hundreds of children are dying from easily cured ailments, such as diarrhoea and undernutrition.

Nutrition indicators have traditionally been the lowest – three times the national average - in the poorer southern provinces of Iraq and generally in rural areas, according to UNICEF. Now, because of violence, these areas suffer greater poverty than ever before.

:cry Americans can irraticate hunger globally. It is a sad day when we have this blood for oil war going on and decent Americans and innocent Iraci die everyday, thru war and the tragedy the women and children face. Please, simply hate the politics of some of the Iraci or of the misguided American leader but dont hate the people and the precious children of Irac and the rest of the world that suffers. The religious hate of the world is just rediculous, whatever happened to peace? Why do we let the children suffer so much, starving to death? Americans- we drive our gas gussling SUV's to our doom and the rest of the world needs our help. Lets help them by giving them a hand up so we can truly experience peace in a non judgemental way. Yes, we are always going to have disagreements of politics and religion. But what if we could make the world a better place by setting our disagrrements aside and ageeed on what we have in common? Love for the children. Lets all work together to feed the children.

My heart bleeds for these children. The American and the WESTS peoples complacency for the facists genocide for oil is a sin they will all eventually pay for. I figh tdaily however small to try to oppose these forces. We must simply try our best to rise to the occasion and opposeand support where we can. Steve

It is time that we Americans realize that there is a hidden cost to our unholy war. We must realize that our destruction of a country costs the lives of the innocent. Their blood is on all of our hands. We must all do whatever we can to make this unholy war end and the fools who have led it brought to international justice.

The children
:cry :( :cry I am so upset about what is going on and not just with the children. But first I would like to say about the children, I\'m so disgusted with the fact that they have to suffer because of the war. We should beable to get food to them and water and provide the care they need. I do have an IDEA!!! Why cant we get a 3 day cease fire so that the children and mothers and fathers can get the things that they need. Also the medication. One other IDEA!!! is WE could take the CHILDREN into our own homes so that they would be safe from all the terror that is going on. YES we could do that but would the Governments on both sides agree!!!!!!!
:cry My second thing is are our people really over there because of OIL ??? do we really know why they are there ??? could anyone really tell us why?????
This is what makes me really mad.
Please for give me for not really understanding WHY!!!!!
Thank you.. UNHAPPY MARIA...

The children
Its sad so many have to die and suffer for the lies of corrupt government and the corporations that use the word terror to manipulate the easily misled to wipe out a goup who have not attacked any one and twist others words. Who have attacked no one with no proof, again, to bomb and kill the innocentfor control of their oil. Those who were and are agressive and occupiers before 9/11 are the real terrorists. They are to blame for all the death and continued destruction. Sad so many still believe the continued spin and numerous lies that repeat and stutter out of the goverments mouths. They believe the two party system is really two differant parties. Where war is concerned they both have the same end goal, gain control of the oil, just differant sets of manipulation to do the job. Differant dates to finish getting the same job done, not democracy, oil control. They use words like the left or terrorist to cover up not having to say they want to wipe out a group of people to have their oil, without having to actually say it and own up to their own greed and evil. The democrates are not anti get control of the oil, they only say they can get the same job of genocide done in a differant manner, so our troops can come home. But there will be a new terrorist by then, axis of evil is a list of others. Left right is just a clanging gong, call it for what it is, Genocide for oil and world control. To maintain and do that the troops will never come home be real.

The children
WE have just seen how our government takes care of it own wounded soldiers and takes away their V.A. benefits. They lie to the soilders and public, and they care less about the side damage they have created in the lives of these children. By the time the theses truths are well known it will be to late. They take away cameras and film when they can and try to hide all. News people disapear over there befor much truth can come out. What little makes it people try to dispute it by saying it is lies and propaganda to help the terrorist. The billionairs that own teh papers and TV are for the war and try to manipulate what news is reported even when it is criticle of the president. People have to realy look to other sources to try to find the truth, know and understand the true history of ours and the europeans history. Genocide and power has always been a part how the wars were done.
