A little contrite but still unrepentant

by Ben Heine / MWC NEWS
by Ben Heine / MWC NEWS
As a young boy whose upbringing took place under the aegis of pre-Vatican II doctrinal Catholicism, it was the sacrament of confession – reconciliation nowadays… as if it had something to do with the reestablishment of cordial relations with God – which had me in a constant state of fluster.  And it was during those weekly sessions, as I kneeled at the pew line waiting for my turn at the confessional that I faithfully went through the routine: examination of conscience, contrition for sins, and intent never to sin again.

But my counselor-priest always told me that the key to the sacrament was in the way you felt sorry, and not just simply in being somewhat contrite for your sins.  According to him, if you aspire for the eternal vision of God, it must be a perfect act of contrition… out of love for God; and not just feeling half-heartedly sorry… out of fear of placing your soul on the path to hell.  The latter, to him, just wasn’t saintly enough.

Well, Father John’s admonitions on contrition came to light once again this last Sunday as our crowd of 10,000 strong – by some counts closer to 15,000 – made the well-planned, and for the most part orderly, 20-block pilgrimage for peace in Downtown Portland (Oregon). A crowd that I soon realized was atypical of a regular peace march, my feeling was that the majority of these folks would rather have been caught death than participating in those peace marches back in late 2002 and just prior to the Iraq invasion four years ago.  So why this change of heart for so many… and what does it mean for the country, both short and long term?

Of these latter-day converts to peace, I’d say that a few had initially swallowed lock, stock and barrel the lies put out by the Bush Administration (WMD, terrorist ties, and the rest of Cheney’s menu); however, the majority of these marchers, just like the vast majority of those who had stayed home, were simply hawks who had borrowed a few white feathers from doves. Some had relatives or friends serving in the military in Iraq or Afghanistan, and the idea of bringing the troops home had an appeal to them.  Others did not seem to have a major idealistic thrust or specific direction but showed disgust for the inefficient way Bush and his cadre of Keystone cops had handled just about every issue.  One small business owner even confided to me his “economic concern” that the long term cost to the nation caring for the disabled – those horribly maimed as well as the anticipated legion of ex-soldiers suffering mentally – may prove untenable for an economy that will keep having less and less of the pie making up the world’s wealth.

The predominant signs, both in number and size, made up what can be construed as the march’s theme: to end the occupation of Iraq – “Just Say No to War”; “Bring Our Troops Home”; “Support Our Troops”; “Out Now”; “Give Iraq Back to the Iraqis” and similar text.  A few signs were a bit more forceful, mentioning the Pentagon-provided numbers of American casualties to date, or an occasional “Impeach Bush,” but little beyond that.  As for Iraqi casualties and dislocations – over 500,000 civilian deaths and 1 million wounded; 2 million forced into exile and up to 1 million internal refugees – they did not seem to have sufficient relevancy to command most marchers to talk about them, or to give them the degree of outrage merited.

My two companions and I were walking right next to a small group of musicians who were trying to perk things up a bit by providing new lyrics to an old American classic, “Sixteen Tons.” Recorded by many renowned artists for over three generations – pea-picking Tennessee Ernie still my favorite – it was being reenacted in front of us for this century and the ugliness of a new company store which extends the length and width of Old Babylon.  The song had graduated from the misery of coal mining in early to mid 20th Century Appalachia to the suffering and destruction that extends in much of the Middle East carrying a “Made by the USA” label.  Not just Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Palestine where peoples’ lives have been affected by American actions, but in neighboring countries as well.  The only lyrics I recall being chanted by our co-marchers were those of the four-verse choir:

“You invest sixteen quarters, and what do you get?

Just being four years older and deeper in debt.

Saint Peter, don’t you call us, ‘cause we can’t leave;

We owe our souls to the empire war…”

That morning I had received an email from a Spanish journalist friend who had attended the peace-rally held in Madrid the day before (Saturday).  It had been a comparable crowd to ours, in size but not in advocacy, as I deduced from the way it was described by my friend.  According to him, the sign which commanded center point of attraction read: “They lie. They torture. They kill.  Culpable to The Hague!” And he also quoted a comment made by a journalist who had just returned from various capitals of the Near East:

“Boy, do they ‘love’ Americans in Damascus, and in Amman, and in other communities of Syria and Jordan where the price of real estate has skyrocketed thanks to the way Americans have managed the occupation!  And it’s not just real estate but the price of most everything.” To those of us who live in America’s Pacific Northwest, we appreciate the impact of such exodus by Iraqis… here we know them as Californians.

It looks as if those who are seriously concerned about international relations and peace have their work cut out for them in this Hawk Nation, for repentance has not found a way into Americans’ lexicon. That act of perfect contrition is not about to happen, not just yet; so we’ll have to settle for those imperfect acts of contrition.  Contrition of this sort would not have pleased Father John, but we have little choice knowing we can only change Americans’ hearts and minds one small step at a time.

And some thought this Congress might provide a conduit for contrition. How illusory!

So well written. I only hope the resistance can grow much faster as the marches also help others realize how much faster they need to move to accomplish. I do not feel marches can stop the machine, more will have to be invented. World dominance for the machine and its ownners cannot stop now, as it fears it will die, so it surges on. Marches will not stop this fight for world dominance. Some new inventivness must rise to the occasion, to help educate the poor and the white collar workers. Its well stated by most of those in power, in both parties the war must continue, just methods are the quarrel. The elections did not work as they just morph with it now. So the marches must pursue to escalate resistance at some new level. Nonparticipation and education on all levels. The Media on most or all levels cannot be trusted to inform as we have seen in all three major, Radio, TV, News papers. People must talk to others, we have been suppressed to much. Bushes words to go keep spending may in fact be helping the movement to dominate so we can just keep borrowing from China and Japan to pay. WE will pay with our freedoms and later our pockets. WE MUST START TRYING TO STEP OUT SIDE OUR COMFORT ZONES. The machine if you will is ever cunning and never sleeps. Please do not leave it up to the youth, we need their energy but it can not be done by them alone. Baby boomers it was not written in stone life holds for you certain gaurantees. You may have been bought and sold a poor product, wakeup. The Muslims and their oil are the American Indian all over again. And yes this congress will only provide the same end results down a similar yet differant winding road. Tactics mere change of tactics, same immoral results.

US repentance, de-Nazification & CAAAA (
Ben- thank you for such an an excellent and humane article.

After defeat in 1945 the German response to the Jewish Holocaust (5-6 million victims) can be summarized by the acronym CAAAA (C4A) - Cessation of the killing, Acknowledgement of the Crime, Apology, Amends and Assertion that it would never happen again.

In 2007 how has America responded to the ongoing atrocities in the Occupied Palestinian, Iraqi and Afghan Territories (post-invasion excess deaths - avoidable deaths, deaths that did not have to happen - of 0.3 million, 1.0 million and 2.4 million, respectively, mirrored by post-invasion under-5 year old infant deaths of 0.2 million, 0.5 million and 1.9 million, respectively)?

None of C, A, A, A, or A have been applied. The best the world can REALISTICALLY hope for is a Democrat victory in 2008, a new president (who, UNLIKE electpral funds-impoverished clean-skin Barack Obama) will have actually VOTED for these atrocities - and a TEMPORARY winding back of US-Israeli State Terrorism (USIST), US State Terrorism (UST), US-UK-Oz State terrorism, US-UK democratic imperialism (democratic tyranny, democratic Nazism) until the NEXT US war of aggression, the NEXT cowardly, genocidal American War on Women and Children.

What is NEEDED is, as for post-war Germans, a rigorous adherence to CAAAA (C4A) and , as recommended by outstanding Jewsish American financier, philanthropist and Holocaust survivor George Soros, the \"de-Nazification\" of Amerika.

Ben , I hope there is an answer to halt teh asault on the M.E. I also hope people will remember that we had a very insperational and backed anti war man from the last 04 election, Howard Dean who the democrates dropped and signed up a pro war man in Carey. while the same hope was possbley hoped for accountability and reform was hoped for from the 06 election we have seen no such TRUE public support from a new congress, in fact just recently recinding checks on the president to keep him from escalating the war or starting new ones without the approval of congress. They have given his destructive hand back to him. If this is to enable them to ganin further support for a white house in 08 let us not forget this may be at teh cost of many more Iraqi and american lives. I do not think this 2 party system is capable of functioning to serve the American people. It serves only to confuse the people. Then to carry out the wants and needs of top 1% of the populations need and greed for M.E. and oil control to serve only their needs. The system is in need for a complete over haul. Starting the next election process early serves only as a distraction to allow them to expand the war now. Even if this conclusion is wrong the next election will be to late. The lives lost in the last 2 yrs may well be double that or more by then in a deeper quagmire or possible WWIII. More drastic measures are in order. Wishing watching and debating over the next lame president only suppresses a meaningful measure of the people to stop the war now. Slow withdrawal only plays into the ability for expansion and more complexities towards getting it stoped. More marches and further creativity to put even greater pressure on our representatives and the administration must be allowed to grow and to develop in order for this to be achieved. People should beware that many possible flag waving, attention destracting acts may come into play to distract from the anti war movement. I supppose people even feel a false sence that something has been achieved by participating in a anti war march, yet it is only a baby step toward achieving an end, a necesssary first step. Another 9/11 or head on conflict with Iran has become just to up front and on edge. There are many projects planed in Michigan , New York, Chicago and Atlanta this month and 1st parts of April. Time is of the essence! :eek
