Americans believe the world started turning on 9/11 Most Americans believe the world started turning on 9/11 and very few realise why it happened. In 1991 the UN imposed sanctions on Iraq, sanctions which by 2001 had caused the premature deaths of around 1.5 million Iraqis according to UNICEF which also estimated that the of excess deaths in Iraq among children under age 5 alone was 343,900 to 525,400. This of course prompted Madeline Albright to declare in 1996 that the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children were “worth it”. True these were UN Sanctions not American sanctions but it was the US Government alone that refused to release these sanctions despite being fully aware of the genocide it was causing. In addition both the US and UK Governments authorised the illegal “no fly zones” and used this as a cover to destroy Iraqi infrastructure further adding to the huge death toll which occurred in Iraq. Immediately after 9/11 on the 7th Oct 2001 Bin Laden issued one of his videos in which he referred to Millions of children in Iraq being killed which of course explains the motive. Now we’ve heard numerous excuses for the illegal invasion of Iraq, from weapons of mass destruction, links with terrorism, able to attack the west in 45 minutes etc and as each one is disproved and ridiculed another is invented. The latest is of course to “rid Iraq of an evil tyrant”. Now that suggests doesn’t it that there was some concern in the West for the well-being and humanitarian treatment of Iraqis? But that in turn doesn’t explain why the USA and UK thought the lives of 1.5 million Iraqis were expendable. In addition conservative estimates put the number of Iraqi deaths since March 2003 to be around 750,000. The sad truth is that even more Iraqis have died due to the actions of the USA and UK than did during Saddam’s time and that would include casualties that occurred during the Iraq/Iran war. But if war itself is a crime then the biggest criminal has to be the USA. So what was Albright referring to when she said the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children were “worth it”? I’m afraid to say that I have reached the conclusion that she was already, as early as 1996, referring to Iraqi oil. As the U.S. Department of Energy in Spring 2002 admitted, "In the past, dependence on oil has cost our economy dearly. Oil price shocks and price manipulation by the OPEC cartel from 1979 to 1991 cost the U.S. economy about $4 trillion, almost as much as we spent on national defense over the same time. “ As we now know the USA is trying to impose an oil agreement on the Iraqi puppet government that would sign away 70% of oil revenues for the next 15 years at least, oil production which remains un-metered in order to hide the amount being produced, how much it’s being sold for and to whom it’s being sold to. That is the real reason why Iraq was invaded, it’s the reason British troops are dying in Iraq and it’s the reason why the USA will not leave Iraq, unless of course they are forced . Michael Lee, UK
