All shook up by Carol Wolman

What will it take to bring about peace on earth?  What will it take to dislodge the purveyors of dirty energy and industry from power, and replace them with public servants who truly care about the well being of the planet and all its inhabitants?  What will it take to abolish nuclear weapons and clean up the dispersed nuclear material that is harming the gene pool around the world?

It will take a massive change, of consciousness, of social and economic structure, of values.  Systems tend to resist change and maintain homeostasis.  The aim of the Bush regime has been to consolidate power and become the status quo, and it has largely succeeded, by claiming legitimacy through rigged elections, by undermining the rights that allow peaceful democratic change, by controlling the public consciousness via the state-controlled media, especially TV.

To dislodge the current power structure, which is leading us to global warming and ecodestruction, will take a massive shakeup.  Perhaps this is was we are being given in the form of tsunamis, hurricanes, and such.

Haggai 2 6For thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; 7 and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations.

The British are taking the lead in recognizing that Katrina and Rita mandate a shakeup of the current order.  In a series of outspoken comments - a thinly veiled attack on the Bush administration,  Sir John Lawton, chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, hit out at neoconservatives in the US who still deny the reality of climate change. {mosgoogle right}

Referring to the arrival of Hurricane Rita he said: "If this makes the climate loonies in the States realise we've got a problem, some good will come out of a truly awful situation." [1]

There are many proposals for changing the world peacefully, into a survival, people and ecology-friendly mode.  One is Dennis Kucinich's bill which would mandate a Department of Peace in the US. [2]

Another is the Simultaneous Policy of John Bunzl, for introducing political/economic change worldwide. [3]

In order for world consciousness to change, divisions among religions must end.  Robert Mendelson has laid out a way to harmonize all the great spiritual traditions in his books Armageddon, Peaceful Style, and The Way of Holiness. [4]

I pray that these dreadful hurricanes will shake us out of our torpor, and give us the impetus to fulfill the desire of all nations for peace on earth.
