A Perfect Storm in Medical Care
By: Rosemarie Jackowski

ImageAn Associated Press report reminds me of a poem that my father had hanging on the wall in his garage. The framed print said.

"From the time you were born till you ride in a hearse, things are never so bad that they couldn't get worse." My Dad was a very wise man. The poem that inspired him many years ago says a lot about the health care system today in the United States.  On August 18, 2007, the AP reported

: "...Medicare will stop paying the costs of treating infections, falls, objects left in surgical patients and other things that happen in hospitals that could have been prevented....The rule identifies eight conditions _ including three serious types of preventable incidents sometimes called "never events" _ that Medicare no longer will pay for. Those conditions are: objects left in a patient during surgery; blood incompatibility; air embolism; falls; mediastinitis, which is an infection after heart surgery; urinary tract infections from using catheters; pressure ulcers, or bed sores; and vascular infections from using catheters. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said it also would work to add three more conditions to the list next year....Last year, Mark McClellan, then director of the Medicare and Medicare programs, said the government could save hundreds of millions of dollars a year if the Medicare program stopped paying for medical errors such as operations on the wrong body part or mismatched blood transfusions. Medicare provides coverage for about 43 million elderly and disabled people..."

The implications of this new rule will have disastrous effects for many - young and old. The scenario is this:  you go to hospital for a minor surgical procedure - maybe an appendectomy. When you are wheeled out of surgery, you are minus one appendix and in its place you have a pair of surgical gloves, three sponges, and a spit sink. Weeks later the infection created by the foreign objects causes your temperature to approach the boiling point of tar. You return to your medical provider. X-rays diagnose the problem. Based on the new Medicare rules, the hospital denies care. The patient dies.

Conspiracy theorists might come to the conclusion that this new set of rules was planned a while back. The path was prepared. The propaganda campaign about the ease of filing and winning medical malpractice suits made way for these new Medicare rules. Tort reformists have poisoned not only the national jury pool, but also the national psyche. We now have a Perfect Storm in medical care. When a patient is the victim of medical malpractice he is on his own. There will be no medical coverage for alleviating medical errors. To make matters worse, the possibility of achieving justice in the courts is almost less than zero.

The continuing stream of bad news about health care could be sugarcoated by remembering that there are many excellent surgeons and other medical practitioners. That fact is not debated. Many years ago, after walking around with a ruptured appendix for a considerable length of time, my life was saved by a surgeon. I will never forget Dr. John Groblewski - a talented and dedicated doctor in Pennsylvania. He was loved by his many patients. Unfortunately, the new Medicare ruling will taint all doctors, even the good ones. Why are they silent?

Those who can afford it will join with many who leave the United States as medical tourists. They can have their surgery done in places like India, Thailand, South Africa, and Cost Rica. For those without money, medical care in the US will continue to be a crapshoot.

Do you think it could get much worse for the uninsured?

Watching
I have been watching this space. And it seems you are battling unbelievable complacency. Or is a case of utter defeat, Rosemaria.

surferperson...I like your name. It reminds me of the ocean. No, it can not get much worse for those without money. The usa is in a state of decay in all systems, education, care of the very young and the elderly, the environment and infrastructure. I think Mike is right. The complacency is killing us. It is NOT the politicians and the government - it is the complacency of the masses. Who would have ever thought that the usa would slaughter millions, as in Iraq, and there would be no outcry. Who would have thought that we would become a nation that tortures. Unbelievable! History will say that this Empire yawned its way into oblivion.

Complacency? Dare I say that I think it is greed. With a volunteer military we can play dumb as to what they are doing over there in that quagmire run by people who just don't know what they are doing. Sorry I think they do know exactly what they are doing so they also can wash their hands and claim innocense. In their caos induced state, (state of Iraq and Afghanistan), the caos and internal conflict, (I think they created on purpose for the results it creates, internal killing of themselfs, iraqis contributing to their own genocide.) This same caos gives paus to a withdrawal enabling the same desired policies to have the same desired removal effects of the resistant population. This leaves much less blood on the occupiers hands, should they be brought to trial. The US public mostly baby boomers, spoiled complainers turn their heads hoping that which they wish not to approve of, will end quickly and victoriously at the hands of their corupt leaders, thus saving their 401Ks and retirement. While hardly a majority many times I have heard it stated that I am to old for a revolution and the younger generation will have to do it. Even the chinese products scandal, the quality of which, is not news. Whats news to me is the sudden one or two cases turned into a news worthy item on our marriage with a communist state and its products. I think the real issue is pressure for cooperation in the UN for further sanctions on Iran, that china has not always gone toe and heal along with. Just my hunch can't prove it. It will hurt but if US capitalism has been living a lie at the expense of the lives of under the table wars and coops (Chile, Argentina) and deaths it may have to follow the path of those who before, fell and had to begin anew. Ex. USSR, Argentina. With the corruption and continued assualts on our state can it be saved. At that point when ones back is finally against the wall, all having been said, then what will I do.

After hearing a narrator on the new york stock exchange praising Mayor Guliani's mention of praise for the new french president and his book of proposed reforms for the french working class and the failed french health care system and education system. I thought the french had one of the best healthcare systems. What came to mind was Ronald Reagan and Margarate Thatcher. It dose appear the industrialized nations seem to be taking a bend or move to the right? I wondered if there had been any descrepancies in the french elections or if they use Diebold voting machines. It feels these days and times, that anything that is even a pinch to the left of their center is to be deamonized and taken away as being a failed and worthless policy for the people, not just in the US.

A pinch.
A pinch to the left? Hm.
It is all about balance, I remember at the fall of the Soviet Union, I was discussing the outcome with my son, I said there\'s no counter balance, the right wing is going to run out of control. I am not claiming that the Soviets were virtuous, they had degenerated into a foul regime, although there was signs of moderation.
But look at where the US is heading.
Anything that has a social label, is stigmatized. And the trouble is the US is exporting their brand of belief, ether covertly or by force.
I do not think the US people have a bat in hell chance, of a universal health system, much would have to change. The brutish right wing administrators, I believe, fear any example of a social system working.
After all US citizens travel abroad and they might start asking too many questions.
In passing, watch how the US will start haranguing Britain, now it has decided to act independently over Iraq.

A pinch.
It can't be about balance, any thing to the left or of a marxist or socialist nature is a threat. So they deamonize it and this is what only causes the pedullum to swing with more momentum. But then this of course always ensures an approach to balance. It seems there still needs to be some better checks and balances, like those we seem to have been loosing. Need to instill anew to insure this is harder to achieve , if we ever can regain some of our system back.

Misunderstood
Possibly you misunderstood me,
Before the fall of the soviet union, there was a communist party in Australia, and other left wing groups, after the fall of the soviets, the communist party in Australia folded, there was no base for the left of politics, there began a shift to the right, that became a gallop, this I am sure was repeated all around the globe. The rednecks would shout, \'A victory for democracy!\' Overlooking the fact that these left wing groups were legal and could stand for election. I am not saying bring back the soviets, things have a way of sorting themselves out, in the end there will be a backlash, have you seen what is happening with the Russians at the moment?
All this has something to do with a fair health care for all.

Lost my response. Try again but was afraid I wasn't getting teh point. Not sure I follow your intent. I see your user name in other post. I have seen much of late on russia not on health. 15 yr anniv. since its collapse and viewed a number of related on cspan. Reason for its collapse, many reasons and jury still out. Interesting note 60% of Russians wish to return, 30% of that possibly nastalgia they claimed? Also a new book on Russia called Lenins tomb, a remark or two the author made towards Trotsky put me off, he may be quite informed??? I cannot profess to be a scholar, I know trying to contain my frustrations I am swinging (BINDLY!) more and more to the left. The injustices and the lies, as the whole becomes deeper and darker with no accountability. I feel I could no longer defend this system with its hidden crimes any more than the attrocites of Stalin's. What I suspect they or(industrialized nations lead by the US, and corrupted UN)to steal the control of natural resources of the middle east alone with genocidal intents, how do those numbers relate. Lets leave out all the numerous other, Vietnam, Korea, S.A., Panama, we could go on. No matter which system, when greed and corruption hits, how can one judge the basics of the original ideology. The silence around me and yet there are voices, just not in my proximity. Has become to the point I care not if I upset my own people if it makes them talk more, even at avoiding interacting with me. Back to the russians at the moment please if you have the time direct me to an enlightenment link page of sorts. I will have to check some other readings I am behind, to see if any russian is in and see if I can translate it. I see you are registered here. I will have to pursue things to more depth later. Probably over reacting to your intent. Will watch for your comment. Should this be moved to the blog option?

In a quick search I see the ICFI or WSWS appears to have a base in Austrailia. Not the communist party but very left. Also they have a party in US? Just only felt, not folded up, a threat as a contender no. too small.

There is something I picked up along the way, that two thirds of the population will go along with any thing, no matter how horrendous it may be, as long as a person deemed to be a person of authority and trust says it is OK. It came up in a conversation I had with a rather amazing woman I know, who has a string letters behind her name and many great talents. She was talking about psychological test that were carried out. Although I had heard of this before, but she was talking as a Psych. Also Merton and others have made the observation that a politician can get people to believe lies, he/she does not have to prove the truth, just has to keep repeating the lies.
So when a shifty politician says the majority of the people agree with the government. I think, so what? I'm in the minor third, I am still awake!
I think to a politician the truth has no value unless it can be used for political advantage, mostly they are lie spinners.

Yes, two I know of, actually 3. I have one recorded, that is more diverse in its report. It actually covers one of the other two, which are very similar. The one can be rented and is German, called Das Boot, and was made into a movie. A similar experiment was done in the USA, which came first? The USA one was highly critisized, and because of its results probably cannot be repeated. A short on it is documented in the other called "The Human Experiments", which is more as I said detailed and educational. One thing I think I remember is a loner is more apt to react in a crisis, than when others even if strangers are around. The US experiment has been brought up more because of the Abu Graib prison and its human rights violations. I noticed elsewhere you are in Austrailia. I have seen these on the cable Sundance,IFC, and another cable channel. Das boot and the US experiment were controled studies in prison settings, that ran amuck. The Human Experiment covers this and more if you can find it,maybe even at a library, since it is a documentary.

You know, I found Thomas Merton almost prophetic in his observation of his society, but of course he was viewing things at first hand during the Vietnam saga, and all those unspeakable lies that were spread by the US, remember the domino theory?
Another great man I have read,(it probably shows something of my philosophy), was that great swami, Vivekananda.
He had the knack of reducing what often seems like a complex idea to simple logic. Here is a couple of the many quotes he made:Every human being has the right to ask the reason why, and
to have his question answered by
himself, if he only takes the trouble; The truth requires no prop to make it stand. The trouble is as I see it, the last thing the politicians want is for people to exercise their freedom as thinking humans. And don\'t they spend a lot of money and time propping up massive lies? I guess this is a little off where this thread started, but in a sense it is relevant.
And don\'t we all learn from each other, that is the beauty of discourse.
Yes I am in Australia, like America it is wonderful place, with lousy politicians.
