Bush Plans War on Iran
By Marjorie CohnImage

The Sunday Times of London is reporting that the Pentagon has plans for three days of massive air strikes against 1,200 targets in Iran.  Last week, Alexis Debat, director of terrorism and national security at the Nixon Center, told a meeting of The National Interest, a conservative foreign policy journal, that the military did not intend to carry out "pinprick strikes" against Iranian nuclear facilities.  He said, "They're about taking out the entire Iranian military."

Bush has already set the wheels in motion. With Rovian timing, Alberto Gonzales' resignation was sandwiched between two Bush screeds - one aimed at ensuring Congress scares up $50 billion more for the occupation of Iraq, the other designed to scare us into supporting war on Iran. As Gonzales rides off into the sunset, the significant questions are who will take his place and how that choice will facilitate Bush's occupation of Iraq and attack on Iran.

One name that's been floated for Bush's third attorney general is Joe Lieberman, the "independent" senator from Connecticut.  Lieberman, who advocates the use of military force against Iran, was the only person Bush quoted in his August 28 speech to the American Legion.  Bush called Iran "the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism" and pledged to "confront Tehran's murderous activities."

"Gonzales greased the Bush/Cheney wheels for torturing in violation of the Geneva Conventions, illegally spying on Americans, and purging disloyal Bushies."

Gonzales greased the Bush/Cheney wheels for torturing in violation of the Geneva Conventions, illegally spying on Americans, and purging disloyal Bushies.

Similarly, Lieberman would ensure the Justice Department mounts a vigorous defense of a war of aggression against Iran.  And Bush would get a two-fer: Connecticut's Republican governor would appoint a Republican to fill Lieberman's seat, returning control of the Senate to the GOP.  A Republican-controlled Senate would direct the agenda, thereby furthering the Bush/Cheney plan.

Lieberman is closely affiliated with American Israeli Public Affairs Committee.  "AIPAC leverages its power by an alliance with the Christian Right, which has adopted a bizarre ideology of 'Christian Zionism,'" according to University of Michigan professor Juan Cole.  "It holds that the sooner the Palestinians are ethnically cleansed, the sooner Christ will come back.  Without millions of these Christian Zionist allies," Cole added, "AIPAC would be much less influential and effective."

"AIPAC leverages its power by an alliance with the Christian Right, which has adopted a bizarre ideology of 'Christian Zionism,'"

University of Michigan professor Juan Cole.

During the 2004 election, a 100% "AIPAC voting record" was Lieberman's litmus test for an acceptable presidential candidate.  As the House of Representatives was on the verge of passing a resolution that would've required Bush to consult Congress before attacking Iran, the AIPAC lobby stopped it in its tracks.

Bush's WMD-hyping against Iran is déja vu in the run-up to Operation Iraqi Disaster, where he played loose and fast with the truth about Iraq's alleged WMDs.  His statement that a nuclear Iran could put the region "under the shadow of a nuclear holocaust" conjures up his images of a "mushroom cloud" in the hype-up to Iraq.

How inconvenient for Bush that the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) just found Iran's uranium enrichment program is operating well below capacity and is nowhere near producing significant amounts of nuclear fuel.  The IAEA report says Iran "has been providing the agency with access to declared nuclear materials, and has provided the required nuclear material accountancy reports in connection with declared nuclear material and facilities."

Iran and IAEA agreed on a plan with a step-by-step timetable of cooperation to settle unresolved issues. The agreement said there were "no other remaining issues and ambiguities regarding Iran's past nuclear program and activities," and characterized the accord as "a significant step forward."

"This is the first time Iran is ready to discuss all the outstanding issues which triggered the crisis in confidence," said IAEA director general Mohamed ElBaradei.  "I'm clear at this stage you need to give Iran a chance to prove its stated goodwill.  Sanctions alone, I know for sure, are not going to lead to a durable solution"

In 2003, when Dr. ElBaradei reported there was no evidence that Iraq was reconstituting its nuclear program, the White House was not pleased.  And as Saddam Hussein became more cooperative with the weapons inspector, Bush became "infuriated," according to Bob Woodward.

Bush's vow, "We will confront this danger before it is too late," is the Iran incarnation of his illegal preemptive war doctrine, which he inaugurated in Iraq.  In a clear signal he is seeking regime change in Iran, Bush called for "an Iran whose government is accountable to its people, instead of leaders who promote terror and pursue the technology that could be used to develop nuclear weapons."

Barnett Rubin reported on Global Affairs blog that one of the leading neo-conservative institutions has "instructions" from Dick Cheney's office to "roll out a campaign for war with Iran in the week after Labor Day; it will be coordinated with the American Enterprise Institute, the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, Commentary, Fox, and the usual suspects.  It will be heavy sustained assault on the airwaves, designed to knock public sentiment into a position from which a war can be maintained.  Evidently they don't think they'll ever get majority support for this - they want something like 35-40 percent support, which in their book is 'plenty.'"

Bush/Cheney created the White House Iraq Group (WHIG) to lead a propaganda campaign to bolster public support for war with Iraq.  The White House decided to wait until after Labor Day of 2002 to kick off WHIG's mission.  Chief of staff Andrew Card explained, "From a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August."  Five years later, they're marketing a new and even more dangerous product - war with Iran.  British military historian Corelli Barnett says "an attack on Iran would effectively launch World War III."

Our military spending has reached $1 billion every 2-1/2 days and we are borrowing $2-1/2 billion per day. Bush is mortgaging our children’s future security and wealth. We have lost more than 3,700 soldiers in Iraq and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died.

We have already seen how easily Congress caves in to AIPAC.  It's up to the people.  As Noam Chomsky said, "The most effective barrier to a White House decision to launch a war [on Iran] is the kind of organized popular opposition that frightened the political-military leadership enough in 1968 that they were reluctant to send more troops to Vietnam."

As I have posted elsewhere, of this rumor. There is a planned White house or contact peoples representatives on Sept.6 Frankly ??? I think an economic shut down would be the only effective and even then. With the resignation of the Idaho republican senator I suppose another repugnant will be appointed, not that teh democratic party has been of any resistance to speak of. Out side of major demonstrations and major civil disobedience. All attempts may prove to be to little to late. If they do this with purse strings in the UN it will take a world protest by the peoples of the industrial nations. People start mobilizing what ever can be done must be brought down hard and with no let up. With Murdoch's empire and now owning the Wall Street Journal, even other journal giants are behind this. With the China Russian colitions building, the west is panicking, the scramble for control in Iraq has just amplified all the threats. Bush will then have a reason to declare a state of emergency.

Racist Zionism, US & war crimes
Excellent article. What this is about is a PROSPECTIVE WAR CRIME at the behest, among others, of the racist, war-mongering, anti-Arab anti-semitic, Islamophobic, traitorous, Racist Zionist, US Israel Lobby - the Racist Zionist tail wagging the dog.

Unprovoked bombing attack on a remote, populous country country such as Iran (population over 70 million) would be an immense WAR CRIME - it was for this that the Nazi generals and leaders who didn't make it to the Americas were TRIED and HUNG after 1945.

Americans should wise up to the traitorous, blackmailing Racist Zionists in their midst who are perverting American values and American policy because of their traitorous prime allegiance to a war criminal, grossly human rights-abusing rogue state, Racist Zionist-run Apartheid Israel.

Apartheid Israel and its Racist Zionist backers have ALREADY cost the US $2.6 trillion (see "The Cost of Israel" on MWC News at the link provided below) and another $2.5 trillion (the accrual cost of the Bush Wars against Iraq and Afghanistan, according to 2001 US Economics Nobel laureate Professor Jioseph Stiglitz; see "The Cost of War" on MWC News via the link provided below)

These racist, criminal policies will only end (a) when decent Jewish and Arab Israelis vote out the Racist Zionists running Apartheid Israel and demand a non-racist Peace invovling equity, justice and reconciliation - AND (b) when the American public eschews the Bush-ite mass media (especially that of the Dirty Digger Rupert Murdoch); wises up to the Racist Zionist (RZ) traitors, bullies, liars and US-perverting blackmailers in their midst with primary allegiance to a foreign, nuclear-armed, human rights-abusing rogue state, Apartheid Israel; and demands that US foreign policy should be (a) consistent with International Law and (b) for America and NOT for a blackmailing gaggle of traitorous, racist fanatics.

Stone age.
June,SCJ and Dr Gideon have spoken volumes,
From where I am looking the only thing that belongs in the stone age, is your mind. But maybe I am being unkind to the Neanderthal, they probably had compassion.
Do you not realize you are talking about men women and children, suckling babes and unborn fetuses by the millions, animals domestic and wild. Oh you do! You are a special kind of person, looks like there will be a place for you in the Bush dictatorship.
I apologizer if I got you wrong.

Bombing advocacy a UK crime
Well said, Mike. Several British Muslim London demonstrators over the Danish cartoon matter have recently been jailed (gaoled) for 4-6 YEARS for dangerous, intemperate, rhetorical advocacy of the bombing of Denmark and America i.e. even rhetorical advocacy of bombing is illegal in the UK and can be punished by severe custodial sentences.

Of course even rhetorical advocacy of bombing is offensive, dangerous and OBSCENE - as can be immediately gauged by normal human reactions to any person who advocated, for example, RAPE.

I don\'t know what US or Canadian law has to say about such things but in Australia it is coloured by the Racist Zionist-driven un-reason of \"terror hysteria\" - thus a Muslim Australian intemperately \"sounding off\" in the \"privacy\" of his own home could face arrest, arraignment, extensive pre-trial incarceration and then about 20 years in prison under Anti-terrorism Laws if the Secret Police are listening.

In contrast a Racist Zionist Australian is free to go to Palestine and actually KILL Palestinian or Lebanese Women and Children - including Australian Lebanese Women and Children (but only in Racist Zionist-occupied Palestine or in Lebanon, or any other country the Racist Zionists want to invade, not in Australia).

A Google search now for the utterly obscene phrases \"nuke Iran\" and \"bomb Iran\" yields 122,000 and 394,000 URLs, respectively.

What sort of people seriously or even rhetorically advocate the mass murder of millions of people in a remote, peaceful country on the other side of the Earth?

Something akin to the UK criminalization of bombing advocacy is surely needed - such people AT THE VERY LEAST need to be arraigned, tried and punished by being PUBLICLY IDENTIFIED.

Bombing advocacy a UK crime
On July 17, 07 Bush put out a executive order. “Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq,” cites powers granted to the president under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA). powers under IEEPA have been expanded to include blocking financial assets of individuals targeted by the US, including “designated terrorists” and “designated terrorist organizations. Bush has met with Harper recently and the Mexico president in Quebec and wwas a large anti war boycot there as they watched the protestors on closed circut TV sign out side teh tents video taping stated they were there so teh peoples voices could be herd. As was stated in the article reporting the meeting how many cell phone interceptions and filming of buss passengers entering and exiting the general area is anybodies. They have started teh elections here early but this is only because they wanted to start taking thepublics pulse early, maybe this is why only the democrates started. Republicans waited at least a month or more it seemed. During this time Bush vetoed the war funding bill which had a troop witrhdrawal date written into it. They immediately took it out and approved it and he signed it. This is when teh Cindy Sheehan resigned from the democratic party andthe anti war protest, to try to form a new independant movement. She adn her group were recently arrested when presenting a democrate with apetition with over 1million signatures on it to do something. Then proceeded with a sit down strike and Conyors had tehm arrested. He was previously befor the Nov elections voicful for bush impeachment, reciently inthe last few weeks he has become outspoken again. This is just bantering I fear along with Edwards sudden hard tone turn on the US elite, telling it like it is. Yet in the next few weeks we will see further funding 50 billion for iraq alone. Further media retoric towards demonising Iranians. Mid month a report from war generals on the success of the surge. Wonder how that might read. Threats and intimidation are weekly it seems. Recently on CNN reports of incrimination were detailed and weel covered and in the same report the news casted report was cut off just past saying, \"The chinese have sent back potatoe chips\" and cut off and not repeated. Not repeated how dose that sound like CNN. Now if it were Micheal Jackson, it would be repeated and rectified for a 24/7 . For yor question what kind of people advocate mass murder, it is not just the military industrial comples, but alas, the Amerika corp elites on all levels. How people cannot ad this up on the right or even connect the dots, I think when your right you feel you don\'t need to bother with learning to count. And I need to learn to read and write. Any country safe to run to, Rice was even in Spain recently, spreading peace, good will and how to handel emergency relieve procedures for birthing pang contractions in public facilities. :upset

Bush Plans War on Iran
Your Statement is a flat out Lie, you said; bush has been talking about going into Iran, preferably with nukes. The Left Media and others who hate Bush have made this claim for the past 6-years. Show me the proof that Bush made the statement, if you can. The left has lied about Bush so much that they now believe there own lies to be true.

Bush Plans War on Iran
wand You must lead a sheltered life. Bush just said the other day on national TV, a lie but non the less. "That Irans gaurd was responsible for american soldiers deaths by supplying weapons to insurgents. He aslo said he would takethe necessary military means to stop Iran. Do you think he intends to send inthe boy scouts or a land invasion. They have already used U.D. bombs in Iraq. And the article quotes are from right wing sources. Bush dose what his military wants he has said the generals are the boss. Second of all most of the media and their owners are for military expansion, just because they write and article critisizing something or how something was done dose not mean they are to the left. Most critsisms are on tactics and that they have done a poor job, that dose not translate they are to the left, when in fact they want control of Irags oil for U.S. military expansion. You listen to to many generalizations, as the right tries to use so they can manipulate people to their causes. If they are against the nueclear energy plants how do you think they will stop Iran from haviong them or stop Irans army gaurd from suppling weapons. At this point you need to educate youself on what war means and premptive war. You tell use how they plan to go into Iran to stop them. Any critisism is left in their eyes, even if it comes from a right wing organization. Elected democrates are critisizing the president and his policies. But of course left people critisize also. Article offers sources where the info came from, check it out your self.
