A Letter to the Opposition Thanks to a GOP friend, I just received a video that every American should see. It is another variation on the old theme of trying to get George W. Bush off the hook for the entry into the Iraqi War with the argument (familiar to any 12 year old): “Well, everyone else said it was OK.” In it we have short clips from the speeches of nearly every leading Democrat from and including Bill (and Hillary) Clinton asserting the need for regime change in Iraq, validating the existence of WMD and supporting George W. Bush in his move to war. I found it quite well enough produced and the evidence against the Democrats damning enough that it should be seen by every voter. I sent my Repug friend the following response: Dear friend, Thank you for sending me the video you attached to your last email. The following is my considered response to your comments and the contents of the video. We should be wary not be drawn into the carefully laid trap of merely attacking the war strategy to the neglect of the primary argument against the illegality of the whole enterprise, beginning with the Shock-n-Awe invasion. To my mind, a “victory” in Iraq (whatever the hell that is) is more abhorrent than a “defeat.” I think the employment of both of these words are examples of a really atrocious abuse of the English language. I find the mindset of everyone using these archaic terms somewhere back in the pre Vietnam era. We absolutely must be forced out of Iraq in disgrace so that, at some somatic level, the body politic will once again remember the ancient advice that we should not “go abroad looking for monsters to destroy.” I really did love the video by the way. Really. It was quite well produced and factually accurate - something I am not used to in these Neo-Swiftboaters. I wish the producers were working for my side. Perhaps after reading the rest of my comments you may decide that they actually are. I intend to send the video to all my progressive Democrat friends who still think there is a hope that these fools they so cling to for direction will find backbone, charisma or leadership. Especially Hillary who will certainly be riding the threadbare donkey in the upcoming Presidential election. To my way of thinking, the only thing that could possibly be worse for this country than another Republican president would be a Democrat president. I always take a great deal of delight in these Neocon driven arguments that assert how bipartisan the build up to the War in Iraq was. It has been fairly pointed out that Bush took the somewhat vague language of the resolution as an excuse to launch a totally illegal operation that was by no stretch authorized. Perhaps this was more an indication of the vagueness of his mind than of the actual wording. We should never misunderestimate the motivation of someone determined to misunderstand even the simplest material in order to accomplish their ends. Those with little long term memory will fail to appreciate the patriotic hysteria that Bushco whipped up in response to his planned build up to the war. The build up began exactly on day one of his first term and went public on September 12, 2001. It would have taken considerably stronger mettle than any of these Democrats possessed to buck this trend. All the information concerning Saddam’s WMD and nuclear capabilities, or complete absence of same, was available at the time of the vote on Bush’s war powers resolution. The Democrats never read the dissenting reports and probably were not interested in the reading, as it would have necessitated taking a courageous stand. I also loved the quotes cited from Ol’ “Collateral Damage” Madeleine and “Slick” Willie. The picture would not be nearly as complete, or as damning, without them. Sometimes I less stomach for these two spinmeisters than I have for Colin and George. A year ago I heard a really interesting and revealing interview with Scott Ritter, who was the chief weapons inspector in Iraq under the Clinton administration. He said that President Clinton was not interested in determining whether Saddam was complying with the terms of the disarmament agreement because he was committed to keeping the brutal sanctions in place. Ritter claimed that, time after time, when they were denied admittance to certain facilities - back up, that would have permitted entry, was denied by the UN Security Council under the direction of the Clinton Administration. The result was, that after hours and sometimes days of waiting for authorization and back up, inspections at a given site had to be abandoned. Pundits will quickly argue that this was because Saddam was, in reality, hiding something. No? No. The CIA had, by that time, infiltrated the UN inspectors in an attempt to obtain information that might be useful to take Saddam out - I mean regime change with extreme prejudice. This made requests to gain access to certain areas vital to Saddam’s personal security problematic. It has since been pretty conclusively established that after 1996, Iraq had no unaccounted for WMD or any semblance of a nuclear weapons program. Everything else is just bipartisan smoke and mirrors. Our motives in the Mid-East have always, always been nefarious, whether headed by a Democrat regime or the Repugs. The current benighted resident of the Offal Office just happens to be so incompetent as to have finally made the game painfully obvious to even the dullest of the great unwashed. That was Bush’s primary “crime.” There will be no end to these misadventures until we wean off the teat of oil and have a government that is not paid for, lock stock and barrel, by the criminal regimes of the State of Israel. Any attempt to look for leadership from either venal Party in these matters will only result in more of the same. I would appreciate it if you would restrict any responses you may have to my comments - strictly to a factual discussion and not the usual volley of personal attacks and insults.
