Glasgow Rangers's perfect start to the European season continued when the Scottish runners-up scored a stunning 3-0 victory at Olympique Lyon in the UEFA Champions League.

Walter Smith's side, who beat German champions VfB Stuttgart 2-1 two weeks ago, are second in Group E with a maximum six points from two matches.

However things are lookinmg dire for Lyon.

After getting past the group stage of the competition in the past four seasons, the French side are bottom after conceding six goals in two games and scoring none.

The visitors went ahead against the run of play in the 23rd minute when midfielder Lee McCulloch headed home a DaMarcus Beasley corner.

Rangers doubled their lead after 48 minutes when former RC Lens striker Daniel Cousin fired home after meeting an Alan Hutton cross from the right.

Five minutes later, U.S. midfielder Beasley put the result beyond doubt when he made it three.

Barca succeed in Stuttgart

Second-half goals from Carlos Puyol and Lionel Messi gave Group E favourites Barcelona a 2-0 win at VfB Stuttgart.

Stuttgart had finished the first half in full flight, twice forcing breathtaking saves from Victor Valdes, only for a goal after the break to change the game dramatically.

Defender Puyol, an early substitute for the injured Rafael Marquez, poked the ball in from a few metres in the 53rd minute after keeper Raphael Schaefer failed to hold a Ronaldinho header.

Messi made certain of victory 14 minutes later when he swept the ball in from Thierry Henry's cut-back.

It was a second victory in two games in the competition for Barcelona and a second defeat for the Bundesliga champions.

That the first half ended without a goal was remarkable given the artistry of 2006 winners Barcelona and the eagerness of Stuttgart.

Rooney ruins Roma again

In Manchester, Wayne Rooney again proved the scourge of AS Roma as his first goal of the season gave Manchester United a 1-0 win and top spot in Group F.

Rooney had scored in both legs of the quarter-final tie between the sides last season, including one in United's 7-1 rout of Roma in April.

A repeat of that scoreline never looked likely as Luciano Spalletti's side, with a starting lineup including just four of the team humbled six months ago, restored some Italian pride with some cavalier attack.

However, they were unable to stop Rooney as the England international struck 20 minutes from time to give United maximum points from their first two games.

Sporting record first win

First-half goals from Tonel and Polga gave Sporting a 2-1 win at Dynamo Kiev as they registered their first victory in Champions League Group F.

Sporting scored after 14 minutes when defender Tonel tapped the ball home after Kiev goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy was unable to clear an inswinging cross by winger Yannick Djalo.

Kiev equalised just before the half-hour mark when defender Vladyslav Vaschuk fired home from long-range after being set up by a Goran Gavrancic backheel.

Sporting grabbed the winner thanks to Brazilian defender Polga who guided the ball into the net through a crowd of players seven minutes before the break when Ronny's cross was beaten straight into his path by Shovkovskiy.
