 | | Ajax manager Henk Ten Cate puts his game face on | Chelsea has reacted to rumours in both England and the Netherlands that the English Premier League wants Ajax manager Henk ten Cate as assistant to Avram Grant by confirming that it may hire an overseas coach.
The 52 year old Ten Cate reportedly met with Chelsea sporting director Frank Arnesen last week. British papers reported that Ten Cate could join as early as next week, when the Premier League enjoys a short break while players take part in international fixtures. Grant who took over as head coach after Jose Mourinho left two weeks ago, kept Mourinho's assistant Steve Clarke in place. However, the former Israel coach has said he wants to hire more help. "Avram Grant has made it publicly clear several times that he intends to strengthen his back room team in addition to his assistant coach Steve Clarke," the London club said in a statement. "One of the scenarios Avram is considering is a team containing a British assistant coach in Steve and a foreign assistant coach, a system the first team are already familiar with." Ten Cate, who was assistant to fellow Dutchman Frank Rijkaard at FC Barcelona before joining Ajax a year ago, became Ajax coach in May 2006 on a two-year contract through to July 2008.
