UEFA President Michel Platini believes Sepp Blatter has started 'Mission Impossible'
UEFA president Michel Platini has criticised a FIFA plan to reintroduce tough limits on foreigners playing in European Union leagues.

"It's impossible," said Platini when asked about FIFA president Sepp Blatter's plan to impose a system where a team's starting lineup would have six national players by the 2010-2011 season.

Blatter's plan would be a direct challenge of EU authorities, which embrace the principle of freedom of movement of workers, allowing EU footballers to seek employment wherever they want in the 27 member nations.

"We cannot defend that today. We do not have the legal framework," said Platini of the FIFA plans.

"The free movement of workers is the No. 1 rule in Europe," he said.

In 1995, the EU's highest court decided in the Bosman ruling that the strict limits on foreigners were illegal and forced European leagues to open up.

As a result, many major teams in Europe field teams with local players in the minority, or in some cases, such as English club Arsenal, the starting side is often made up completely of foreigners.

Blatter has said that apart from alienating fans, the trend also stifled the development of homegrown talent.
