McCain takes on Ron Paul in Republican Debate | Print |  E-mail
By Shahram Vahdany
McCain tangled on two occasions over the Iraq war, with Ron Paul, a Texas congressman whose libertarian views and opposition to the war have attracted thousands of donors, millions of dollars and a devoted online following.

Asked which government programs they would cut, Paul said bringing the troops home from Iraq would save "a trillion dollars."

McCain accused Paul of promoting isolationism in calling for the United States to disengage from the war. "We allowed (Adolf) Hitler to come to power with that attitude of isolation," he said.

Paul objected, saying McCain had misunderstood his support for nonintervention with isolationism.

"I want to trade with people, talk with people, travel," Paul replied.

Sen. John McCain, freshly back from a visit to Iraq over Thanksgiving, told Ron Paul that our troop are asking you to please let them win.

"The real question you have to ask is why do I get the most money from active duty officers and military personnel?" Paul replied

Freedom is wonderful thing
As proud as I am of John McCain, he's just plain wrong on this war. But he's been in lock-step with "W" on this all the way so I can see why he's sticking with it.

Ron Paul is the voice of the people and liberty is worth fighting for the only true and honest statesman on the stage tonight.

Huckabee? Please.
Huckabee's supposed rise to fame is rooted nothing but his appeal to social conservatives. I, for one, am a social conservative, but that doesn't mean that I think the federal government should regulate morality. As much as a lot of these candidates looked respectable (except Giuliani, man do I disklike him), Ron Paul is the only one out there with a real understanding of economics and foreign policy. Unfortunately Paul wasn't able to convince any undecided voters today, but that won't stop his supporters from being fired up about the campaign, whereas Huckabee's campaign has little real enthusiasm.

Honestly folks, the media is just combing Huckabee up as a vice presidential candidate.

Huckabee? Please.
I hate it when politiciens distord facts.
What is wrong with being neutral in issues that do not consern the USA?
how come no one is attacking Suitzerland or Canada.
Their economies are doing quite well too especially their currencies

Huckabee? Please.
I don't understand why the fact that Paul gets more money from the troops than any other candidate isn't a major story. All we hear from the party is the troops, the troops. Listen to them.

A Ron Paul & Dennis Kucinich administrat
McCain clearly has no understanding of the finer components of the history of foreign policy.
Oh I really hope we do get an alliance of Dennis Kucinich.

unballanced
I would have liked to have seen the views and opinions of more candidates. The same few candidates were given most of the questions. I like how Ron Paul stood his ground with McCain.I had kind of liked Mitt Romney, but I wasn't impressed with him. Rudy had all the time in the debate, gave some slick answers, and yet....he just comes off as an A$$ hole. Huckabee came off as the big winner, but not really. Even my teenage son noticed the bias that cnn had toward. Tancredo didn't get enough time to make an impression.Hunter thompson was treated like a first tier candidate, which makes me feel manipulated. The debates need to be more ballanced so that people can know where the candidates stand. I guess Ron Paul's my guy.

More substance please!
I didn't expect CNN to give Paul a lot of time, but I did expect a little more substance. They ask Huckabee about the economy when they could have gotten a robust and in-depth answer from Paul. Meanwhile, they ask Paul why some of his supporters believe in conspiracies and whether he'll run as an independent.

Being a Paul supporter is painful.

Impeachment and 800LB. Gorilla
Why is it Ron Paul won\'t vote for or back impeachment. He will only support an investigation. This stalls for time, while thousands of lives are still to be lost and possible escaltion into Iran or even Pakistan. Kucinich endorsed Kerry last time, this time he says he wil only endorse a democratic nominee if they denounce the war. Better build a movement to override the money masters. The man with the best record for truth and going up against the elite is Nader the spoiler. Lets not forget the Dean scream, when they cut his kahunas off. Hes so subdued now. For Paul not to stand up for the truth on impeachment, and Kucinichs past endorsements. I\'ve seen Nader speak and he tells it like it is all the way. Ron Pauls message on blow back is not new nor is he the first to have exposed it. I am deeply releived to here some opposition, but it is going to take a strong movement to overcome the Facist control that has the fake two party system in its pockets. To stiffle any movement that could prevent further genocide and escalation by tieing the white houses hands is unexcusable. I hope people realize their being distracted with the hope of salvation in an election that is a year away. Which is why the election primaries were started early. Should they gain the momentum, I predict an incident will happen, to give Bush the authority add justification to pull off declaring state of emergency. Everyone else is doing it! Don\'t pay attentionto me I\'m just the 800 LB. gorilla in the room.
