Didier Drogba, Chelsea's star striker, has undergone a knee operation which could see him miss several key matches for his English Premier League side.

"Didier's knee locked yesterday (Friday) afternoon and the decision was taken to have the operation immediately in the medical interests of the player," Bryan English, Chelsea club doctor, said in a statement on Saturday.

"The procedure went well and he will begin his rehabilitation as soon as possible."

Drogba missed Saturday's league match at home to Sunderland and is also set to be sidelined when Chelsea play Valencia in the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday, and the key clash against fellow London club and league leaders Arsenal on Sunday week.

However by having the operation now, Drogba has increased his chances of being fit to captain the Ivory Coast in next month's African Cup of Nations in Ghana, which runs from January 20 to February 10.

Ivory Coast finished runners-up in the last African Cup of Nations, losing the final in a penalty shoot-out to Egypt, with Drogba missing his spot-kick.

Chelsea started this weekend third in the Premier League, six points behind Arsenal, but were expected to close the gap with a win at home over Sunderland.
