Good News & Bad News on Iraq Oil Law The good news, and its very good news, is that thanks to the amazing efforts of Iraqis being supported by people all around the world - including YOU - the Iraq Oil Law appears to be all but dead (for now). The Iraqi Parliament refuses to pass it and the Bush administration has quietly given the al Maliki government the "ok" for now, not to pass it. This is a major accomplishment and certainly not the outcome that the Bush administration nor Big Oil was hoping for. They wanted the best possible deals and they thought they could have it. They were denied. The people of Iraq protested, risked their lives, provided analysis, wrote letters, held meetings, advised their elected officials, and the parliament listened. We protested, educated, analyzed, coordinated, and contacted our elected officials. It worked. You should feel very proud. The BAD news is that even if Big Oil can't get the best deals in the world, the companies are still very much interested in getting their hands on Iraq's oil. They have a friendly government now willing to sign deals with them. And they have the U.S. military holding firm to protect their interests for the next 30 years. The latest news out of Baghdad is that the Oil Companies are getting ready to sign major oil deals with the Iraq government under Iraq's existing law. The article below lays out the details. This means our efforts to expose the oil agenda behind this and pending wars cannot slacken. The oil companies must remain our focus and we must continue to push to get our elected officials to renounce Oil Money, declare their commitment to Peace, and demonstrate that they are not beholden to the deadly demands of Big Oil. If Big Oil signs contracts, even if they are not dream contracts, they will still need the U.S. military to continue to p! rovide security. They will still need a friendly government in! Iraq an d they still want a friendlier one in Iran. We must celebrate our victories and hold firm for the work ahead. Stay tuned.
