At least 17 people were killed when Taliban fighters attacked a group of civilian road workers in southern Afghanistan, according to the interior ministry.

Sixteen other workers were wounded on Tuesday in Zabul province, about 300km southwest of capital Kabul, the ministry said.

Bashary said that Afghan and international security forces had responded to the attacks, killing seven fighters and wounding 12.

In a separate attack, a Nato soldier was killed and another wounded in an explosion in the south of the country, a statement from the International Security Assistance Force said.

The nationalities of the soldiers were not released following the blast in the Ghazni province.

The latest casualty brought to 38 the number of foreign forces serving under Isaf and the separate US-led coalition killed in Afghanistan this year.

More than 70,000 international troops are based in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban, which was forced from government in 2001.
