Rene Preval, the president of Haiti, has chosen Ericq Pierre, a senior adviser with the Inter-American Development Bank, to be the country's new prime minister, officials say.

Pierre, an economist, will succeed Jacques-Edouard Alexis, who was forced to resign on April 12 over rising food and fuel prices that sparked violent demonstrations.

At least six people died in riots over food prices in Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.

Pierre's appointment must be ratified by Haiti's parliament.
