George Bush, Stupid or Evil? by Jason Rosenbaum | | Ben Heine/ MWC NEWS |
The Seminal I had an interesting conversation with George Turner last night, pertaining in some ways to Memorial Day, and I wanted to put the question we were discussing to folks here: Why did George Bush invade Iraq? Was he a victim of hubris, stupid enough to believe his own ideology and actually think he could turn Iraq into a "shining beacon of democracy" in the Middle East? Or was he evil, looking out only for business interests and intent on making money for himself and his friends off the disaster that is Iraq - military contractors, security industries, corrupt rebuilding - a la Naomi Klein? It's a complicated question. For my part, I think I believe it's a bit of both. Perhaps Bush thought that in the best case scenario, maybe his grand plans for Iraq might have worked. If he had succeeded (yes, I know how far fetched that sounds), he would have come off looking pretty smart and secured his place in power and history for years, possibly a generation. And along with that gamble, he may have thought in the worst case scenario, he'd simply make a lot of money for his friends while screwing up the country. Either way, he wins. What do you think? George Bush - stupid or evil - or both?
