At least 24 people have died in South Africa after a bus crashed off a cliff.

The vehicle plunged 80m off a mountain road near Matatiele in the Eastern Cape, landing upside down in a river, on Tuesday, police said.

At least 22 people were also injured in the accident which happened at about 10am (0800 GMT).

Police were at the scene to free trapped survivors.

Zendra Wiid, a police spokesperson, said that about 30 people have been taken to hospital.

Some of those injured were airlifted by army helicopter to a facility near Cedarville in the Eastern Cape province.

The privately owned bus was believed to be carrying 80 passengers.

Wiid said that the bus was partially submerged in the river and that windy conditions were slowing down rescue efforts.

She added that the cause of the accident was not yet known.
