Or how low can they go... "BBC News reports that a U.S. based Christian group known as The Resistance is calling for a nationwide boycott of the coffee selling giant, Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX). The group's complaint against the company stems from the commemorative use of a toned-down version of the company's original logo. Starbucks states that the logo, which features a dual-tailed mermaid sporting cleavage, is not inappropriate. The fringe Christian group refers to the logo as a naked woman with legs "spread like a prostitute." Rain Do Mar (Queen of the Sea). My mermaid My Queen of the Sea Her singing is wonderful My mermaid is beautiful In the waves Where she lives Ah, have compassion See my pain Ah, have mercy See my pain. - Brazilian popular song The fundamentalists may be crazy, but they are not necessarily stupid. Their actions are not so inconsistent with their beliefs. If not consciously, then unconsciously, they recognize one of the manifestations of the Goddess in this seemingly innocuous Starbucks Logo. One of the most deadly enemies of their patriarchal, sexist religion is The Feminine. They are even down on the Roman Catholics for their veneration of Mary, Mother of Jesus. The mermaid symbol they are so threatened by is actually one of the personifications of Yemana, divine Mother Goddess, goddess of the sea and loving mother of mankind, daughter of Obatala and wife of Aganju. Like all gods and goddesses she has a benign and a wrathful aspect. The sea goddess can save the drowning soul or, to those who show her disrespect, cast them down into the whirlpool. It is said, "ignorance of the power of the gods is no excuse." These fundamentalist nutcases had better be careful whom they are messing with. This Goddess in particular is slow to forgive those who know not what they do.
