Two bombs have exploded east of the Algerian capital Algiers, killing one person and wounding at least six others, witnesses and security officials have said.
A suspected suicide bomber targeted the entrance to a military barracks in the first attack, a security official said. That attack was followed by the explosion of a handheld device outside a nearby cafe, in the coastal suburb of Bordj El Kiffan, security officials said. Algerian authorities blamed the attack on the barracks to an Islamist group, saying it placed the bomb near the the repulican guards camp. A double suicide bombing in December in Algiers killed dozens of people, including 17 UN workers. An al-Qaeda group claimed responsibility for that attack, but no claim has been made for Wednesday's attack. Algiers is preparing to play host to several international events in the coming days. An international trade fair is due to begin this weekend in an area near where the bombs hit.
