Myanmar's military government has detained 14 opposition party members after a protest in Yangon calling for the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The rally early on Thursday was celebrating the Nobel peace laureate's 63rd birthday but was broken up by a pro-government militia.

Witnesses said several of the protesters were beaten.

A Buddhist monk is reportedly among the 14 who were arrested.

Last month, Myanmar's ruling military announced it was extending Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest for a sixth year.

She has spent more than 12 of the last 18 years either in jail or under house arrest.
