Paul Collingwood, England one-day captain, faces an international ban of four one-day matches or two Test matches after his side failed to complete their 50 overs in the required time in the third one-day game against New Zealand at The Oval.

A statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC) said the punishment would be determined when Collingwood meets match referee Javagal Srinath on Thursday afternoon.

The statement said Collingwood faced the ban because Wednesday's offence was his second as captain within a year.

Collingwood was fined 50 per cent of his match fee when England fell short of the required over rate in a one-day international against India on August 24 last year.

An international ban would complete a miserable two days for Collingwood who admitted on Wednesday he had been wrong not to recall New Zealand batsman Grant Elliott who was run out after a collision with bowler Ryan Sidebottom.

Although New Zealand won the game off the last ball, the Black Caps were incensed and captain Daniel Vettori refused to shake Collingwood's hand after the match.

"In hindsight I might have made the wrong decision," Collingwood told Sky television.

"I will have to live with it."

Apology accepted

Vettori, whose team take an unbeatable 2-1 lead into the fifth and final match at Lord's on Saturday, later accepted an apology from Collingwood at the post-match victory ceremony.

"There was a bit of raw emotion at the end," Vettori said.

"I apologise to Paul and his team, now we have to move on."

New Zealand finished on 246 for nine from 50 overs after dismissing England for 245 from 49.4 overs.

With two runs required and one ball remaining, number 11 Mark Gillespie squeezed a full-pitched delivery from Luke Wright into the off-side.

Graeme Swann's throw missed the stumps with nobody backing up and Gillespie and Kyle Mills stole the winning runs.
