Twelve miners were initially rescued on Wednesday, but two of them later died in hospital. Sixteen bodies were also recovered from the mine, according to Xinhua. The 28 miners had been working in the state-owned Huisen Liangshuijing coal mine in Shaanxi province when the shaft collapsed on Tuesday. China's coal mines are among the most dangerous in the world. Official figures indicate that nearly 3,800 died in Chinese coal mines last year, down 20 per cent from the year before. But many independent labour groups say the actual death toll is much higher, stating that many accidents are covered up to prevent costly shutdowns and legal action. Coal-generated power accounts for around 70 per cent of China's fast-expanding energy needs.
