The Israeli military has closed border crossings into the Gaza Strip after a rocket was fired from the territory in defiance of an Egyptian-mediated ceasefire in effect since last month.

The rocket was fired from the Hamas-run territory on Thursday, prompting an early weekend closure of the border crossings, Israeli officials said.

"A Qassam rocket was fired from the Beit Hanoun area. We have not identified an impact but an explosion was heard north of Sderot," an army spokesman said.

Several rockets and mortar rounds have been fired at Israel from Gaza since the truce went into effect.

'Losing confidence'

The truce was supposed to ease Israel's crippling blockade of Gaza, imposed more than a year ago when Hamas took power in Gaza.

The military said the crossings, closed on Thursday, would remain shut at least until Sunday.

"The crossings will be closed [on Friday] because of the rocket," Peter Lerner, an Israeli army spokesman, said.

He said their reopening on Sunday would "depend on the situation".
