Robert Mugabe and the Second Amendment
by Jacob G. HornbergerImage

A front-page article in last Saturday’s Washington Post detailed an inside account of how Zimbabwe’s thuggish president Robert Mugabe ensured his victory in the country’s recent presidential run-off election. The account provides a good refresher course on why our American ancestors enshrined the right to keep and bear arms in the Second Amendment — and why they so detested standing military forces within their own country.

Having garnered less votes than his opponent in the general election, Mugabe, who has held power for almost 30 years, was contemplating dropping out of the race. Afraid of losing their lucrative government positions, however, loyal government bureaucrats, including many of Mugabe’s military goons, convinced him to keep fighting.

Mugabe and his advisors came up with an interesting campaign plan known as CIBD, which stood for coercion, intimidation, beating, and displacement. Led by Mugabe’s loyal military forces, his goons embarked on a violent and brutal campaign of murder, torture, and beatings designed to intimidate the opposition.

The plan worked, causing Mugabe’s opponent, Morgan Tsvangirai, to drop out of the race, delivering the runoff victory to Mugabe. Despite the fact that his election to office is as illegitimate as an election could ever be, Mugabe has promised to remain in office until God removes him.

So, what do Zimbabweans do in this circumstance? Nothing, except pray for his removal from office.

Most everyone would agree that if there was ever a right of revolution — i.e., a violent overthrow of one’s own government — this is it. Unfortunately, however, Zimbabweans are precluded from exercising the right of revolution it owing to one big reason: gun control. Because they lack guns, Zimbabweans lack the means to oppose the armed government goons that do Mugabe’s bidding and keep him in power.

As our American ancestors understood so well — and as the situation in Zimbabwe is demonstrating, a disarmed citizenry inevitably becomes an obedient citizenry. It lacks the means to object when tyranny rears its ugly head.

Standing armies are inevitably loyal to their commanders, who are loyal to their political rulers. They will obey orders faithfully, especially when “national security” is at stake.

That’s why our American ancestors detested standing armies. They knew that all too often rulers would turn the guns of their military and police forces inward, against their own people. Equally important, they knew that the military and police would faithfully, loyally, and “patriotically” obey the orders of their superiors.

Thus, the central idea behind the Second Amendment was not to ensure that people could hunt deer or shoot burglars. It was instead to ensure that U.S. rulers were prohibited from depriving Americans of their “doomsday weapon” — a weapon that would always ensure that Americans would have the means to defend themselves from the tyranny of their very own government — yes, the federal government in Washington, D.C. That’s something that Zimbabweans are today unable to do owing to gun control in their country.

Some Americans claim that the Second Amendment is outmoded. They say that while U.S. personnel would do bad things to foreigners, they would never do bad things to Americans. Oh? You mean, like the way they tortured and sexually abused John Walker Lindh? Or the way they tortured, isolated, drugged, and brutalized Jose Padilla? Or the way they massacred people, including defenseless children, at Waco? Or the way they shot Vickie Weaver in the head, as she held her baby in her arms, and her teenage son in the back? Or the way they shot and killed antiwar demonstrators at Kent State? Or the way they rounded up Americans of Japanese descent and put them into concentration centers? Or the way they engaged in syphilis experiments with unsuspecting African-Americans?

The fact is that American human beings are no different from other human beings. Given a crisis environment where the fear of terrorism (or communism or whatever) is running rampant and U.S. officials are screaming that “national security” is at stake, U.S. rulers will always be able to find a certain segment of U.S. military forces and the CIA to carry out any orders against Americans, just as Robert Mugabe has. All the president would have to do is label any Americans he wants as dangerous “enemy combatants” — “terrorists” or “terrorist sympathizers” — and order the Pentagon and the CIA to take them into custody and treat them accordingly. If a Pentagon official or subordinate refused to carry out such orders, he would immediately be fired (or worse) and be replaced by an official who would faithfully carry out the orders of his commander in chief.

Would the Zimbabweans revolt against their government if they had guns? It’s impossible to know. As Jefferson pointed out in the Declaration of Independence, people will sometimes put up with lots of tyranny rather than suffer massive casualties in a violent revolution. At least the right to keep and bear arms provides people with the option of resistance to tyranny, an option that gun control has extinguished in Zimbabwe.

Mugabe best
Best man for the people. His opponent was backed by the US and Britton to try and get another puppet sudo domocratic president as another step towards US and EU world agression and imperialism. For another opinion on Magabe and Zimbabwe check this for some second thoughts (gowans.wordpress.com). His neighbors whom, the powers that be, seem to like, go under the radar. Mr. Hornberger uses the Washington Post account to prop up another Sadam Hussien figure to go after. Where was the Post on the two Bush elections with the fraud of Floirda and Ohio. Lets not hesitate to expose the failed US tax payer dollars to intervene in a foriegn goverments elections. All this to whip up some fear monguring, to defend the right to bear arms, which we may have to be grateful for, given the direction of total war and military the US and its partnered capitalist countries seem to be heading. Not that Mugabe is innocent but the US and Nato countries seem to be protectants with some pretty suppressive regimes. Saudis, Egypt are two very prime examples. Suffering that is happening in some of our appointed rogue states, seem to have the cause and effect that is from sanctions from those who wish to justify intervention or sell them guns covertly to get in later.

Ghandi's Guns
The 2nd Amendment is outmoded. Not because it is any less necessary at times for the people to rise up against the government, but because when the government posesses such incredibly lethal weaponry there is very little that a citizenry without Tanks, Missiles, Fighter Jets, Artillery and Bombers could do. Civil Disobedience is a much more effective tool for changing government behavior in the 21st century.

Gandhi's Guns, reconsidered
True, arms held by the people cannot compare with tanks, missles, fighter jets, artillery and bombers. But these are limited to the military, and the military is forbidden to participate in domestic law enforcement. What keeps the government honest is when the people have the same kinds of arms as the police, and vastly outnumber them. The police don't have tanks, jets, bombers, missiles, etc.

Once upon a time
My first complaint was with trying to use and promote the demonizing of Mugabe, to make his point. Shortly after Katrina the administration having all national gaurd troops used up over seas, changed the rules. While we can argue weather it is leagal or not the US military now incudes in its pentagon budget, since that time, funds for the training of military forces for domestic needs. Not recalling who the perpetrators were at the Kent State protests, people were killed. Also it must be noted that Blackwater is under contract and was used during Katrina. Our constitution and bill of rights are being violated and trampled daily, it seems impossible to keep up. When Bush chooses not to veto he writes in his own defining statement on the bill that gets passed. I feel the only hope is the crumbling of the US- Agression partnership. This would crumble thru the electoral process as what happened in Spain, the US would stop from lack of cooperation. Our own system seems to be well courrupted and at the total subservience to the protection and desires of top 1% wealthy, as the founding fathers intended. Truth be known they did not trust the common man, it is set up to protect those at the top as it is doing. The checks and balances obviously are easily broken and stepped over. As James Baldwin spoke: they have all the guns and technology and more money than we can ever posses, brain wash and incorparate your children. What few guns cannot change, is non cooperation, we must think about it. They have guns in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Palistine, while it is not lost, the genocide numbers continue. Can they hold out with their guns? Lets ask some american indians? Where do they keep them at? Things to consider?

Ghandis Guns Re-reconsidered
"...the military is forbidden to participate in domestic law enforcement..."

I'm sorry but this is no longer true. Public Law 109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122) (2), which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder."

My guns
These comments are why I bitterly cling to my guns. I am the only person that I trust. It does not matter what the law is, who the person/group is, I will always bear arms and use them as I see fit. If guns are so dangerous, then why are the heads of the gun control groups not dead? The reason is that guns are not a problem, people are. It's easier to blame the guns than to change the way people act or think. Most people that are killed by guns are involved in criminal acts and are shot by people that they are dealing with (or trying to cheat). This is not a justification for murder, just the way it is. No matter what laws you make, it will only affect the law abiding, not the criminals.

My guns
Mike at # 2 and "Ghandi's Guns". Mike ignores that the US Military is entirely composed of "Citizen Soldiers". More than half of these soldiers, airmen, sailors would refuse the order to fire on their countrymen. Furthermore, after they leave the service many would volunteer their military knowledge and skills to resist just such tyranny that is subject to the "security of a free state". In short, if the defenders of the Constitution needed artillery, a well led squad of 15 men could overwhelm an armory and make of with the needed firepower. The "Guard" may not even stop them. The argument that the US military is to powerful is always made by those who have not served and do not understand that those of us who have had taken an oath to protect the Constitution. We have not recanted.

Get up to date
The US military now trains newly enlisted or a portion of them for domestic (civil unrest). Countries of the capitlist economies are preparing for total war, for oil and globalized corporate invasion, ex spreading democracy and humanitarian intervention. You cannot police the world any other way, including on home grounds to control domestic violence and terrorism. They just passed a domestic terrorism act. HR 1955, proposed by Jane Harman (D-Calif.) criminalizes dissenting speech as essentially seditious and supportive of \"terror\". It was passed by near unanimity in the House of Scoundrels, with only 6 votes abstaining or not voting. This has its justifications for one to bear arms. Not many domestic arms will stand up to this ray gun they supposedly developed. It microwaves the people it hits, makes the moisture just under the skin feel like its boiling. Believe its called the reyathon gun. Maybe wearing aluminum foil will block the micro waves. It is suppose to be effective for crowd control, also. Maybe the gun is a made up story? As for taking up arms after years of betrayal and resistance we see the FARC leaders sell out for millions and sancturary in France against their own and columbias goverments death squad. Over a billion chinese at cheaper labor and India over a billion, capitalism cannot continue and enhance the rape of the earth, not to mention oil control. Slaves cannot buy their own products. The top 1% must reinvent themselfs and the system, or only a stake thru the heart of capitalisms corporate greed will stop it. They will probably produce a larger mass genocide before that. You see they think they are above the masses and money and bribery can fix it all. Chances are a mishap over control will arise causing them to turn on themselfs for natural reasource control, thus WWIII. So one might say we may be using guns one way or another.
