The military says the fighter fired on an Israeli civilian driving near the Palestinian town of Qalqiliya early on Friday.

When troops arrived in the area, the fighter shot and wounded the officer before the troops returned fire and killed him, the military said.

No Palestinian group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on the Israeli civilian.

The West Bank is not included in a truce currently in place in Gaza.

Israel continues to carry out operations targeting fighters in the territory, saying the forces of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, are "not yet ready to assume responsibility for security".
